If you are a student assigned to letter, read Oedipus the King, and what, perhaps also to comment on Aristotle's ideas about tragedy and tragic flaws, this site will help you get started. Warning: This is NOT a family site, and thoreau walden essay, Sophocles is NOT family entertainment. Oedipus the King is a monument to Sophocles's dramatic genius, and to the freedom of Athenian thought. Sophocles himself served as an kinds of essay army general. Two of his plays (Ajax and Philoctetes) are performed today to adaptive, help people understand post-traumatic stress disorder, suffered by good people who have undergone life's most horrible experiences. Oedipus the King develops a shocking -- perhaps even immoral -- idea about a human being's ultimate relationship to what are the kinds according to purpose, the universe. Whether Sophocles's idea is true, or whether he believed it, are for you to decide. Commentators on Sophocles, beginning with Aristotle, have tried to essay godfather death, cover over the obvious. This explains the what are the kinds, nonsense about tragic flaws and hybris. We don't know whether there was a historical Oedipus. Essay Lives? Oedipus means swollen feet.

The Greeks pronounced it oy-DEEP-us. Kinds According To Purpose? Oed- is the same root as oedema / edema (tissue swelling; the British preserve the death, initial o), while -pus is feet (hence octopus, the what are the according to purpose, eight-footed animal.) In those days, it was usual to leave an unwanted or defective baby in the wilderness. Laius and Jocasta did this. To be extra-sure, they pierced his little feet and tied them together. (Don't worry about why they bound or pierced the baby's feet, which would not have been necessary to vault college, guarantee the abandoned child's death. What Kinds According? It may have been introduced to explain the hero's name. It also helps later to confirm Oedipus's true identity.) A kindly shepherd found the baby. He gave the baby to a friend, who took it to Corinth, another town. (Corinth reappears in the New Testament.) The king and queen of Corinth couldn't have a baby of their own. So they adopted the letter, foundling.

Nobody ever told little Oedipus that his mother was never pregnant. What Are The? One day, after he had grown up, a drunk mentioned his being adopted. Oedipus questioned his parents, but they denied it. Oedipus visited various oracles to godfather death, find out whether he was really adopted. All the oracles told him instead that he would kill his father and marry his mother. (None of this makes much sense.

Again, don't worry about are the of essay to purpose it. Adaptive Features In Aquatic? This is a folk tale.) To thwart the oracles, Oedipus left Corinth permanently. (Again, don't worry. Yes, Oedipus should have considered that, since he might be adopted, any older man might be his father and what kinds, any older woman his mother. But this is a folk tale.) Travelling the roads, Oedipus got into a traffic squabble and killed a stranger who (unknown to him) was King Laius. In one version, there was a dispute over right-of-way on a bridge. Essay Other? In those days, high rank got to are the kinds according to purpose, go first, Oedipus identified himself as heir to walden essay, the throne of Corinth, and for some reason (again, don't worry about it) Laius's people simply attacked instead of what are the kinds to purpose explaining that he was king of adaptive of animals in aquatic Thebes. Some versions say that the what are the of essay according, rude Laius drove over Oedipus's sore foot, making him lose his temper. What animal has four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening? Of course the answer is a human being -- babies crawl and old folks use walking sticks.) Oedipus married Laius's widow, Queen Jocasta. He ruled well, and adaptive of animals, they had four children. Eventually, Oedipus and Jocasta found out what kinds of essay to purpose what had really happened. (You must assume that accidentally killing your father and other half, marrying your mother is a disaster.) Jocasta committed suicide, and Oedipus blinded himself and became a wandering beggar. In the version that must have been the favorite of Sophocles's Athenian audience, Oedipus found sanctuary at Colonus, outside of Athens. The kindness he was shown at according to purpose, the end made the city itself blessed.

The moral of the folk tale? Even if you try to thwart your destiny, you won't succeed! In Iliad XXIII, we read about one Mecisteus, who went once to Thebes after the fall of Oedipus, to attend his funeral, and he beat all the walden essay prompt, people of what kinds of essay according to purpose Cadmus, evidently at boxing (funeral games) which is the subject of the passage. In the Odyssey XI's catalogue of shades, We read, I also saw fair Epicaste mother of king Oedipodes whose awful lot it was to covering, marry her own son without suspecting it. He married her after having killed his father, but the gods proclaimed the whole story to the world; whereon he remained king of what are the of essay Thebes, in great grief for the spite the gods had borne him; but Epicaste went to the house of the college, mighty jailor Hades, having hanged herself for grief, and the avenging spirits haunted him as for an outraged mother -- to his ruing bitterly thereafter. That's what Homer has to say about Oedipus.

I've been assured that Homer intended the passage to illustrate Oedipus's having the tragic flaw of pride. I can't see what kind of are the of essay according sense this makes. A NYU student found a personal meaning: What is the features of animals, moral of this story? Don't go to what kinds of essay, a fortune teller! Let life take its course. Essay Godfather? Your fate is already written and sealed. If you know all there is to know about what of essay your life, then why bother living? You'll spend the rest of adaptive of animals your life worrying about what's to what are the according to purpose, come. Embrace life and its surprises. Oedipus Wrecked -- humor.

Wonders why Oedipus allowed himself to be made to feel so stigmatized by a mixup that wasn't his fault. For Visa? Moral of the story: Being a victim of gurus, society, and circumstances does not relieve one of the responsibility of what of essay according to purpose thinking for themselves. Iron Essay Question? It does make for a tragic hero, however. Sphinxes -- and a lot on the background of the story. The author is with me on the hamartia business, below. Thanks for the sphinx. Long before we got civilized, ancient Europeans (Greeks, Vikings, others) were already talking about predestination. If something was going to what according to purpose, happen, it would happen and there was nothing you could do about it.

Why would anybody talk like this? 1. Ancient people may have been impressed (or wanted to be impressed) by the fulfillment of essay half lives prophecies. Are The Of Essay According To Purpose? In our own world, most predictions by supposed psychics simply don't come true. But people want to believe in the supernatural, and college essays, people like to tell each other about the are the according to purpose, rare occasions when something happens that a psychic said would happen. So money-making psychics make lots of predictions and keep them vague. People have such a strong desire to other half, believe in the power of supernatural prediction that they even invent stories of psychic predictions being fulfilled. The most famous example (Nostradamus and the gray monk in Varennes woods) continues to what are the kinds to purpose, be told, even though the tale of Louis XVI being disguised as a monk when he was captured there is just a lie.

You'll need to decide for yourself whether prophecies of religionists (past or present) come true today, or have ever come true. Some Christians have taught that the Greek oracles were successful because they were diabolic, and thoreau essay, that they went silent on the first Christmas (for example, Milton's Hymn on the Morning of what are the kinds of essay to purpose Christ's Nativity). Letter? In the Iliad , even Zeus (? same word as theos or God) is sometimes subject to Fate (though sometimes Zeus is fate). According? We also see this in peacetime, whenever people face frightful conflict. A Calvinist friend of mine who struggled with his sexual issues told me how comforted he felt knowing God had chosen him anyway.

For some reason that I do not understand, he could believe in this. He could not believe that he was loved by God as His creation, or loved by God for the sake of Jesus, or even that his sexual orientation might not be the crime that he'd been made to believe it was. Again, I'm no psychiatrist, but I'm glad he could find a formulation that brought him comfort. Most Christians believe that we are responsible for college our behavior even though God knows what we will do. Kinds According To Purpose? So Christians have argued about predestination from essay New Testament days. Luke says that the people who chose Christ were predestined to are the kinds of essay, do so.

Dante asks the blessed souls in heaven about essays predestination, and is told they don't know the are the kinds of essay according, answer, either. Martin Luther spent much of his youth obsessing over how he was unable to be as good as he wanted. Covering Letter? He found his answer not in predestination, but in God's free gift of grace in Christ. For him, this was a comfort and assurance. If you want to know whether you are predestined to be saved, just say your prayers. Kinds Of Essay According? Then you will know you are predestined for salvation. Essay Godfather Death? John Calvin was horrified about the implications of predestination, but emphasized it in his teaching. Other preachers like Jonathan Spiders Edwards and the Wesleys taught that Christ had died for everybody and that everybody had a free choice. Milton has God foresee Adam's sin, and God explains that although He foresees it, he didn't make it happen, so he is justified in punishing Adam. Racine's Phaedra marked a return to themes of Greek tragedy and what of essay to purpose, people being the victims of in aquatic cruel destiny. Racine's milieu was Jansenism, a back-to-basics focus on hellfire and predestination that developed within Roman Catholicism.

Boswell, who wrote the biography of kinds of essay to purpose Samuel Johnson, obsessed about predestination and became profoundly depressed thinking he could end up damned eternally. He's not the college, only person who's had this experience. In the US, the Free Will Baptist denomination emphasized evangelization and need to what are the kinds to purpose, work hard to bring others to Christ, against features in aquatic those who thought that God's predestination made this unnecessary. Some Hindus and Buddhists have taught that a person's behavior in a past life predestines happiness or misery in what kinds according the current one, by the laws of vault karma. Of Essay? Individual believers may find that this frees them from bitterness over life's injustices (natural and human-made). You'll need to decide for yourself whether this is good or bad. Belief in karma has awakened social conscience and kindness to godfather, strangers in those who believe that what goes around comes around.

The theme of predestination continues in secular literature. Chaucer (Troilus and Cressida, The Knight's Tale) deals with predestination. The former is a character study, and the two lovers seem destined for kinds of essay trouble just because of who they are. Adaptive Of Animals? Marlowe's Faustus and a popular fifties song proclaimed, Che sera sera -- what will be will be. Are The Kinds To Purpose? Ambiguous -- do we make our own decisions or not? Prophecies that can't be thwarted are a favorite literary device, especially famous from Macbeth. Ideas about predestination are parodied in Tristram Shandy -- the baby is predestined to have a small nose and an ugly name despite the conscious efforts of the parents to avoid these supposed disasters.

Today, fulfilled prophecies are a staple of fiction. Although the essay, vast majority of what are the kinds of essay psychic predictions in the real world are failures, they come true as plot devices on the Silver Screen. A new face of the predestination debate comes from the death, physicists' model of the world. At least in Newtonian physics, if you know everything about a closed system at what are the according, one moment of time, you can predict everything that will happen in the future. If our world is really like this, then physical laws predetermine what will happen in our brains, and vault, what we will think and do. The laws of physics (ultimately) even determine our decisions about which side to take in a college bull session about predestination versus free will. In physics, an electron can bounce like a billiard-ball but go through each of two holes like a wave. As a mainstream Christian, I'm accustomed of thinking that something can be two contrary things at the same time, and what are the kinds according, that apparent contradictions may not be real contradictions. The Good Lord feeds the birds, but I know how birds really get their food.

I give thanks to college, the Good Lord for the birth of a child, but nobody requests equal time for stork science. I know how I get sick and how I recover, and thank the of essay according, Good Lord for letter my recovery. The bread and what are the kinds according, wine are Christ's body and blood -- I don't know how. The best (though not the thoreau prompt, most scholarly) answer I've heard to what, the Christian mystery of predestination goes something like this: When we are entering the New Jerusalem, we will see a sign overhead saying Enter of adaptive of animals in aquatic your free will. To Purpose? When we are inside, and look back, the features of animals in aquatic, reverse of the kinds of essay, sign will say God chose us from before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). The folk tale of Oedipus has a popular theme -- predestination. Sigmund Freud and the Oedipus complex aren't the subject of this site. Mainstream psychiatry doesn't believe (and never believed) Freud's precise formulation.

Freud observed that while there are many stories about predestination and unavoidable dooms, the story of Oedipus has gotten under people's skins since ancient times. The actual reason, of course, is adaptive features, that it's about dysfunctional family relationships, which really do have a lot to do with behavioral/mental illness. Oedipus -- the legend, from Wikipedia. Tells about modern versions, including some modern ribaldry. Sophocles wrote Oedipus the King for the annual festival where playwrights competed for prizes. It was a major civic occasion, with attendance expected. Sophocles the writer is phenomenally good, especially considering his era.

His writing is tight, with each phrase contributing to what kinds of essay according, the whole. He is full of succinct observations on life. And despite the limits of the form, he often manages to make his characters seem like real individuals. The title of our play is often given in its Latin translation Oedipus Rex, rather than in its original Greek (Oedipus Tyranneus), since the Greek term for college essays king is the are the according, English tyrant which means a monarch who rules without the consent of the people. As the play opens, the priest of essay death Zeus and a bunch of non-speaking characters (old people, children) appear before King Oedipus with tree-branches wrapped with wool. It was evidently the custom to do this in front of a god's altar when you wanted something urgently. Oedipus greets them as a caring, compassionate leader.

The priest explains (really for the audience's benefit) that Thebes is suffering from a plague. Plants, animals, and what are the kinds of essay according to purpose, people are all dying. Other? The people know Oedipus is not a god, but they believe that some god inspired him to solve the riddle of the sphinx and save the according, town. And since Oedipus has been king, he has done a splendid job. So now people look to him to find a cure for features in aquatic the plague.

Oedipus explains (really for the audience's benefit) that he has sent Creon (Jocasta's brother) to what are the according, the oracle of the god Apollo at Delphi to get an essay other lives answer. He's late returning, but as soon as he gets back, Oedipus promises to do whatever the oracle says. Just then, Creon arrives. What Kinds According To Purpose? Since it's good news, he is wearing laurel leaves with berries around his head. Essay Prompt? Creon says, All's well that ends well. Are The Of Essay According? (I'm told that the Greeks loved irony.) Apollo said that the killer of Laius must be found and banished, and the plague will end. And Apollo has promised that a diligent investigation will reveal the killer. Oedipus asks to review the facts. Vault Essays? All that is known is that Laius left for Delphi and never returned. (Don't ask what Oedipus did with the what are the according to purpose, bodies of Laius and godfather death, his crew.) There was no immediate investigation, because of the sphinx problem.

One of Laius's men escaped, and walked back to what of essay according, Thebes. (Don't ask what Oedipus did with Laius's horses and chariot.) By the time he got back, Oedipus was being hailed as king. The witness said Laius was killed by a gang of robbers. (We can already figure out why the witness lied. And we'll learn later that he asked immediately to be transferred away from vault essays Thebes, and has been gone ever since.) Oedipus reflects that if the killers are still at large, they are still a danger. Kinds Of Essay According? He decides to issue a policy statement to help find the killer. The chorus, in a song, calls on the various gods (including Triple Artemis, in walden essay prompt her aspects as huntress, moon-goddess, and goddess of dark sorcery), to kinds according, save them from the plague and from the evil god Ares, who is ordinarily the god of war but is here the god of general mass death. Oedipus issues a policy statement, that whoever comes forward with information about the murder of Laius will be rewarded, and that if the killer himself confesses, he will not be punished beyond having to leave the city permanently. On the other hand, if anyone conceals the killer, Oedipus says he will be cursed. Oedipus continues that he will pursue the investigation just as if Laius were my own father. (Irony.)

The Chorus says that Apollo ought to come right out and say who the murderer is. (The Chorus's job is to say what ordinary people think.) Oedipus says, Nobody can make the iron angels essay, gods do what they don't want to. The chorus suggests bringing in the blind psychic, Teiresias. Especially, they hope he can find the missing witness to the killing. In those days, the what kinds, Greeks believed that human psychics got their insights from the gods. There are other stories about adaptive of animals in aquatic Teiresias. As a young man, he ran into some magic snakes and got his gender changed for seven years. This enabled him to tell whether the male or the female enjoys sex more. This was a secret known only to the gods, so he was punished with permanent blindness.

Teiresias comes in. Oedipus asks his help finding the what kinds of essay according, killers, ending up by saying, The greatest thing you can do with your life is to use all your special talents to help others unselfishly. Teiresias says cryptically, It's a terrible thing to be wise when there's nothing you can do. (As A.A. Milne would say later, and essay, perhaps Oedipus too, When ignorance is bliss, it is what kinds, folly to be wise.) Teiresias says, I want to go home. Oedipus calls him unpatriotic. Teiresias says, Your words are wide of the mark ( hamartia ). Our expression in English is You're missing the point. (Originally an archery target was a point.) We'll hear about hamartia again. Teiresias continues to stonewall, and of animals, Oedipus gets very angry. Finally Teiresias gives in, says Oedipus is the killer, and adds that he is living in shame with his closest relative. Oedipus goes ballistic and calls Teiresias some bad things based on his being blind. (Irony.) Teiresias says, You'll see soon. Oedipus understandably thinks this is a political trick to are the according, smear him, with Teiresias and Creon in iron jawed angels essay cahoots.

Oedipus adds that Teiresias can't be much of a psychic, because he hadn't been able to handle the sphinx problem. Kinds Of Essay According? The Chorus tells both men to cool down. Teiresias leaves, predicting disaster. Letter For Visa? Soon Oedipus will learn the truth and be a blind exile, leaning on his staff. The Chorus sings about the oracle at Delphi, which was supposedly the center of the world. Gods are omniscient, but the chorus has its doubts about human psychics like Teiresias. What Are The Kinds Of Essay? Especially, they cannot believe Oedipus is a killer. Creon comes in, incensed that Oedipus would accuse him of college essays trying to are the kinds of essay to purpose, smear him. The Chorus says Oedipus is of animals in aquatic, simply angry. Creon says he must be nuts. The Chorus says that to the king's faults and kinds according, misbehavior, they are blind. (See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil -- the norm in a non-democracy.) Oedipus comes in and accuses Creon directly of planning a coup, using a smear by a crooked psychic as an excuse.

They exchange angry words. Oedipus asks why Teiresias never mentioned knowing the killer until today. Essay? Creon can't explain this. He defends himself from the accusation of planning a coup. (1) Being king is too much trouble. According To Purpose? (2) Creon has other worthwhile things to do. (3) Creon has everything he needs. Essay Half Lives? (4) Creon has political influence anyway. (5) Creon is what are the of essay to purpose, well-liked and isn't going to do an obvious wrong. You build a good reputation over a lifetime.

A single bad action ruins it. Irony. Oedipus isn't satisfied. He says he wants Creon executed for treason. The shouting-match continues until Jocasta comes in and tells them to break it up, there's too much trouble already. The Chorus says it agrees, and tells Jocasta that both men are at fault. Creon leaves, and Jocasta asks what's happened.

The Chorus talks about what a fine king Oedipus has been, and says, Let's forget the whole business with Teiresias's prophecy. The Chorus uses a variant of the proverb, Let sleeping dogs lie. It's better not to iron jawed question, ask about things that can make trouble. Irony. Oedipus talks about it anyway. Jocasta says, Well, I don't believe in psychics. I'll prove it. Laius and I were told that our baby would kill him and marry me. But this never happened, because we left the baby to die in the woods.

And the witness said that Laius was killed at that place where three roads meet by robbers. Uh-oh, says Oedipus. Which three roads? Irony. Jocasta says, It's where the roads from Thebes, Delphi, and Daulis meet. Kinds? And it happened just before you solved the riddle of the sphinx and became king. Oedipus is upset. He asks Zeus (chief god), What are you doing to me? He asks Jocasta for features of animals a description. Jocasta says, Tall, a little gray in his hair, and you know something, he looked a lot like you. Irony.

Oedipus continues his questioning. The one witness, seeing Oedipus as the new king, asked for a distant transfer. He was a good man, and Jocasta didn't know why he wanted away, but she granted his request. Oedipus tells his story. He was going to the oracles to what are the kinds of essay according, find out godfather whether he was adopted. All of according them told him simply that he would kill his father and marry his mother. As he was traveling alone at the place Jocasta has mentioned, he met a group of men going in the opposite adaptive of animals in aquatic direction. The men, including the leader, started insulting him. Sophocles makes it sound like like a gang of rough men just hassling a lone stranger for fun.

One of the what, men shoved Oedipus. Oedipus punched him back. The leader struck Oedipus treacherously on essay the back of the head with the horse staff, Oedipus turned and hit the leader in the chest with his own staff, knocking him out of the chariot. Then Oedipus managed to are the according to purpose, kill them all except for vault college essays the one who ran away. It was justifiable, self-defense. But Oedipus is devastated.

He says he must be the killer of Laius, and he is ashamed that he has been having sex with his victim's wife. Oedipus says This is too terrible to have happened naturally -- it must be the malicious work of some god or other. He says he will simply leave the city, now, and let the are the according, plague end. He adds that he cannot go back to Corinth, for essay half lives fear of killing his own father and marrying his own mother. The Chorus is deeply sympathetic to Oedipus, and appreciative of his willingness to go voluntarily into exile to save the what are the according, city. They say, Before you make your final decision, try to find the last witness. Maybe he will exonerate you. And Oedipus notes, The witness did say it was robbers, plural. Jocasta adds, Whatever happens, I'll never believe in psychics or oracles. Laius was prophesied to die by thoreau walden essay prompt the hand of his own child. The Chorus sings a puzzling song about how (1) we have to obey the gods; (2) the gods's best gift is good government; (3) if the government is bad, there is according to purpose, no reason to be good; (4) nobody believes in oracles any more.

Jocasta comes in, having visited the local shrines and left little offerings, and asks people to join her in covering for visa praying for the distraught Oedipus. He's our leader, and we need him now. Are The To Purpose? She prays to Apollo to make this disastrous situation better. Irony. Just then, a messenger comes in jawed essay from Corinth. Are The According? He says Lucky Jocasta, you lucky wife! (Actually, Blessed is your marriage bed!

Irony.) The king of Corinth has died, and the Corinthians have chosen Oedipus to death, be their new king. Are The According To Purpose? (Greek city-states were often elective monarchies.) Jocasta says, Great news. And Oedipus will be especially pleased, because now the oracle about him killing his father is void. You see, I was right not to believe in oracles. Walden? Irony. Oedipus comes in, hears the news, and says, Maybe the oracle has been fulfilled figuratively; perhaps he died of grief for my absence.

But I'm still worried about marrying my mother. Jocasta says, Forget it. Life is governed by chance, not destiny. What Kinds To Purpose? Maybe you'll dream about marrying your mother. Covering? You should ignore dreams. Are The According To Purpose? Oedipus is still worried. Essay Other? When he explains to the messenger, the man cracks up and of essay to purpose, says, Well, I've got some good news for you.

You don't have to worry about marrying the lady you've called mother. because you're adopted! All hell breaks loose. Oedipus questions the messenger, and learns the messenger had been herding sheep, had met a shepherd who had found Oedipus, had taken the baby, had taken the pin out of jawed essay his ankles, and kinds according to purpose, had given him to lives, the king and queen of Corinth to what are the kinds according, raise as their own. Oedipus is starting to wonder about iron angels question what has always been wrong with his feet. Oedipus says, It's time to what are the to purpose, clear this up.

Send for the other shepherd. Jocasta realizes exactly what has happened. Walden? Jocasta begs Oedipus NOT to pursue the matter. What Kinds According To Purpose? Oedipus says he has to know. (If Oedipus wasn't so intent on getting to the truth, there'd be no play.) Jocasta runs out horribly upset. Essay Other? Oedipus is a little slower, and thinks, Perhaps she's upset to find out I'm not really of royal blood. According To Purpose? But what the heck -- I'm 'Destiny's child' -- and that's something to be proud of!

I'm me. Irony. The Chorus sing a song in honor of Apollo, and of the woods where Oedipus was found. The say the spot will become famous. Perhaps Oedipus is the child of covering for visa nymphs and satyrs. Irony. The other shepherd is brought in.

He already has figured things out, and pretends he doesn't remember. Then he begs the other messenger to be quiet. But Oedipus insists on the truth. It comes out. Of Essay To Purpose? Jocasta and Laius crippled the baby and put it in the woods to foil a prophecy. Oedipus had, indeed, always wondered what was wrong with his feet. Now everybody knows the truth. Oedipus rushes out. The Chorus sings a song about how transient happiness is, what a splendid king Oedipus has been, and how Oedipus is now the victim of destiny.

The next scene is an extremely graphic account, by an eyewitness. Jocasta ran into the bedroom, screaming. She locked the door from inside. A few minutes later, Oedipus came in, and broke down the door with what seemed to be supernatural strength. He found Jocasta dead, hanging. Oedipus took the body down, then removed the vault college, pin that held up her dress.

He stabbed it again and again into his eyes, saying he has looked at are the kinds of essay according to purpose, his mother's naked body when he shouldn't, and he has learned what he now wishes he hadn't. The blood didn't merely dribble, as after a single needlestick. It gushed on both sides. For this to happen, the choroidal artery that enters the eye from behind must be severed. We can think that Oedipus has actually torn the globes from their sockets. Oedipus now begs to be taken out of the city (so that the adaptive of animals in aquatic, plague will end), but he has no strength and no guide. Oedipus comes in.

Evidently Oedipus passed out after blinding himself, and he curses the person who resuscitated him. The Chorus asks, How were you able to rip out your eyeballs? Oedipus replies, Apollo gave me the strength to do it. Creon is the new king. He is not angry, merely kind. What Are The To Purpose? He helps Oedipus up and out of the city, guided by his two daughters. Staff in hand, Oedipus himself is the answer to the riddle of the sphinx. Oedipus says that some incredible destiny must surely await him. But the Chorus ends with a reflection on how transient human happiness often is: Don't say anybody is fortunate until that person is dead -- the final rest, free from pain. (There is an echo here of Solon's words to iron jawed angels question, Croesus -- don't assume that any particular life will end happily. Is the sense the same here, or different?)

What is Sophocles saying? To discern an author's intentions, look for material that is not required by the plot or intended simply to please the what are the to purpose, audience. In retelling the story of Oedipus, Sophocles goes beyond mere irony. A major theme in the play is whether one can believe in oracles and psychics. By extension, the essay half, question is whether the Greeks believed their own mythology. Sophocles makes a special effort to according, explain that Oedipus killed Laius in self-defense. More generally, Sophocles goes out of his way to covering, present Oedipus as an extremely capable, beloved administrator. Conspicuously, Sophocles NEVER suggests that Oedipus has brought his destiny on himself by any ungodly pride ( hybris ) or tragic flaw ( hamartia ). The last lines seem ambiguous.

They could mean that the what to purpose, dead are more fortunate than the walden, living, because they do not experience pain. Kinds Of Essay According To Purpose? Is life really that bad? The gods made the prophecies that led Oedipus into adaptive features of animals in aquatic, disaster. The sphinx appeared (she must have been sent by the gods), and what of essay according to purpose, Oedipus solved her riddle (the chorus says he must have been guided by the gods.) Teiresias could not solve the riddle, or detect the killer -- thanks to death, the gods. At the beginning, Apollo's oracle simply says, Find the killer -- leading to the cruel ironies of the play. Oedipus specifically says the gods set up his extraordinary misfortune. And at the end, Apollo merely gives Oedipus the strength to carve his own eyes out of what are the kinds of essay according their sockets.

In other words, Sophocles says that Oedipus's frightful misadventure is the intentional work of the features of animals in aquatic, gods. At the end, everybody says this. Pure and simple. What Kinds According? Nobody even asks why. The Golden Age of essays Athens was a time for thinkers, scientists, inventors, and for people to share ideas freely. Greeks were very impressed with reason, and must surely have been asking whether they still believed in their mythology. Social conservatives prosecuted Socrates for expressing doubts about the are the of essay to purpose, gods, but only because they thought this would corrupt the minds of young people. (Does this sound familiar?) People have often noted that comedy and melodrama have arisen independently in many cultures, but that tragedy has its unique beginnings in Athens's golden age -- the first time that we hear people asking the tough questions about adaptive features what they really believed. The idea that Sophocles is putting forward is much like the dark supernatural suggestions that Stephen King offers our own doubting age. Stephen King and his readers don't really believe in are the according his creepy monsters. Other Lives? And I don't know whether Sophocles really believed the what kinds of essay to purpose, message of Oedipus the King.

Sophocles is saying, Maybe the gods do exist. and are consciously and elaborately MALICIOUS. This is the only reason that such terrible things could happen to people. Aristotle's Poetics are lecture notes on poetry, with a focus on tragedy. Aristotle liked to classify and evaluate things, and letter for visa, also liked to talk about human virtue and vice. Eventually, this got him the kinds of essay, best teaching job of his time, as tutor to the boy who became Alexander the Great. Aristotle is reacting in part against for visa Plato's objection to art and theater. Aristotle was especially interested in justifying tragedy to an audience concerned with public morals. I am quoting below from the translation of the Poetics by S.H. Barber. After introducing his subject, Aristotle talks about the subject of to purpose tragedy.

Since the objects of imitation are men in thoreau walden action, and these men must be either of a higher or a lower type (for moral character mainly answers to these divisions, goodness and badness being the distinguishing marks of are the kinds to purpose moral differences), it follows that we must represent men either as better than in real life, or as worse, or as they are. It is the same in iron jawed angels essay painting. What Kinds Of Essay To Purpose? Polygnotus depicted men as nobler than they are, Pauson as less noble, Dionysius drew them true to life. -- II. In other words, when you paint or play a person, you can idealize him, you can lampoon him, or you can try for realism. Aristotle continues. The same distinction marks off Tragedy from Comedy; for Comedy aims at representing men as worse, Tragedy as better than in actual life. -- II. Aristotle means both better-spoken and of better moral character. Aristotle goes on to explain why people make poetry in the first place. He decides that there's an essay death instinct to mimic things, and people like the imitations of others because it's fun to recognize things. He continues. Poetry now diverged in two directions, according to the individual character of the writers.

The graver spirits imitated noble actions, and the actions of what are the of essay to purpose good men. The more trivial sort imitated the actions of meaner persons, at first composing satires, as the former did hymns to the gods and the praises of famous men. -- IV. Aristotle adds that the tragedians were the successors of the epic poets, who also focused on vault high and noble deeds. Aristotle wonders whether Tragedy will ever be better than it was in his era. He tells about what kinds according its origins in improvisation, and its recent history. Aeschylus first introduced a second actor; he diminished the importance of the Chorus, and assigned the leading part to the dialogue. Sophocles raised the number of actors to three, and added scene-painting. -- IV Originally, tragedies were songs sung by a chorus. Then one member would take the role of a character. Aeschylus added a second speaking part apart from the chorus.

Sophocles added a third, and covering for visa, introduced stage scenery. Now Aristotle moves into the famous definition of tragedy. Tragedy, then, is an imitation of an action that is are the of essay according to purpose, serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude; in language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the iron angels essay question, play; in are the of essay according to purpose the form of action, not of essay prompt narrative; through pity and what according, fear effecting the proper purgation of jawed angels essay these emotions. -- VI. Tragedy must be a unified story, about something important. What? Aristotle would say later that tragedy should involve high-ranking people. Essay Other Half? He doesn't give any reason that makes sense. Of Essay? Probably he thought that the great themes of angels essay question life required larger-than-life characters. Arthur Miller would write about a salesman as a tragic hero, Willy Low-Man. And a comic hero would be Truman -- the one true-man in a world that deceives him.

The end of the paragraph begins the to purpose, business that has caused all the trouble. Purging means taking a laxative (our word cathartic for a laxative comes from the Greek term catharsis, which you already know). You watch a tragedy to have a good cry, and get rid of your ideas about bad things happening to good people. Every Tragedy, therefore, must have six parts, which parts determine its quality- namely, Plot, Character, Diction, Thought, Spectacle, Song. -- VI. Aristotle goes on to explain what these are. Plot: the story; the good ones focus on a single episode. Character: the personalities of the characters, as shown in their words and actions. (Considering the limitations of the form, the Greeks did a nice job of drawing character.) Diction: the walden, right choice of words.

Aristotle points out how effective using just the what are the of essay according, right word can be. Thought: Arguments and thoreau essay, exposition. Aristotle compares it to rhetoric. Spectacle: as we'd say, special effects. What Are The Of Essay According? Not so much the thoreau essay prompt, poet's business as the stage-specialist's. Song: words joined to music. What is missing? Aristotle never mentions theme , the thoughts about life on are the kinds of essay which tragedies can be based. Aristotle was a very smart person, and the Greek tragedies remain popular today, not as museum pieces, but as comments on life. Yet Aristotle is silent on this important element of tragedy.

As you continue to study literature, you'll constantly look for for visa themes. I like Shakespeare, and like the ancient Greeks, his themes are often troubling. Macbeth gets much of its impact from its central question -- Is life really a meaningless exercise in kinds according to purpose a dog-eat-dog world? Hamlet focuses on the phoniness and adaptive in aquatic, meanness of human society. Hamlet starts by wishing he was dead. At the what kinds of essay, end, he comes to adaptive in aquatic, terms with life as many modern secularists do, deciding to are the kinds according to purpose, live and love well in an unfair world. The themes of iron angels Romeo and Juliet were radical in Shakespeare's time.

Shakespeare changed the messsage of his source (which was a cautionary tale for what are the of essay teenagers to obey their parents instead of making their own decisions.) Young people should be allowed to choose their own husbands and wives. The disasters of young people -- even a godawful teenaged murder-suicide -- can sometimes be rightly blamed on their parents. And love gives happiness and dignity even in the worst circumstances. Antony and Cleopatra asks the half lives, age-old question: Does illicit love ennoble people, or just degrade them? King Lear reaches a conclusion similar to Oedipus the King, but with the idea that unselfish human love can, at least temporarily, give beauty and meaning in a godless world. Aristotle, the school-teacher, is actually steering his students AWAY from looking for themes. Aristotle goes on to say that the plot is what kinds of essay, best kept unified, without subplots, and the action not covering more then 24 hours. Subjects from mythology are traditional but not mandatory. (Aristotle thought people would be more willing to suspend disbelief if the stories came from accepted mythology.) If there are to be coincidences, they should seem to make sense. But again, Tragedy is an imitation not only covering letter, of a complete action, but of what kinds of essay according events inspiring fear or pity. Such an effect is best produced when the events come on us by surprise; and the effect is heightened when, at the same time, they follow as cause and effect.

The tragic wonder will then be greater than if they happened of themselves or by accident; for even coincidences are most striking when they have an air of covering letter for visa design. We may instance the statue of are the kinds of essay Mitys at Argos, which fell upon his murderer while he was a spectator at a festival, and killed him. Such events seem not to be due to mere chance. Plots, therefore, constructed on these principles are necessarily the adaptive, best. What Are The Kinds Of Essay According? -- IX. Coincidences are crowd-pleasers, and people are willing to suspend disbelief in them. (People want to believe in magic.) A character today might say that the falling statue expressed the will of the college essays, Force. Aristotle launches into a big discussion about simple vs. complex plots. What Kinds Of Essay To Purpose? The best plots are complex, with twists or irony (he calls both of jawed essay these reversal of the are the of essay, situation) or bombshells (recognition scenes). Essays? Aristotle describes a scene of what according suffering as characteristic of tragedy; it depicts somebody suffering physically or dying onstage. A perfect tragedy should, as we have seen, be arranged not on the simple but on the complex plan.

It should, moreover, imitate actions which excite pity and fear, this being the distinctive mark of college essays tragic imitation. It follows plainly, in the first place, that the change of fortune presented must not be the spectacle of kinds of essay according to purpose a virtuous man brought from essay godfather death prosperity to adversity: for this moves neither pity nor fear; it merely shocks us. Nor, again, that of a bad man passing from adversity to prosperity: for what according to purpose nothing can be more alien to essay half, the spirit of what kinds of essay to purpose Tragedy; it possesses no single tragic quality; it neither satisfies the moral sense nor calls forth pity or fear. Nor, again, should the essays, downfall of the utter villain be exhibited. A plot of are the of essay this kind would, doubtless, satisfy the moral sense, but it would inspire neither pity nor fear; for pity is aroused by prompt unmerited misfortune, fear by of essay according the misfortune of a man like ourselves. Such an event, therefore, will be neither pitiful nor terrible. There remains, then, the essays, character between these two extremes- that of a man who is not eminently good and just, yet whose misfortune is brought about not by vice or depravity, but by of essay some error or frailty . He must be one who is highly renowned and prosperous -- a personage like Oedipus, Thyestes, or other illustrious men of such families. -- XIII This passage continues to cause problems. Plays about bad people ending up happy don't satisfy Aristotle. Essay Half Lives? (Beavis and Butt-Head Do America doesn't fit Aristotle's definition of tragedy.) Plays about according thoroughly bad people getting their just deserts in the end don't work because we can't identify with the bad guy. (Richard III doesn't fit Aristotle's definition of a tragedy, either.) Finally, Aristotle cannot imagine that a tragedy could deal with disaster befalling a completely sympathetic character. He says this would merely shock us. But Oedipus the King DOES shock us, and is intended to do so. Godfather Death? Why is Aristotle avoiding the obvious?

We'll soon see. A well-constructed plot should, therefore, be single in are the according its issue, rather than double as some maintain. The change of fortune should be not from bad to good, but, reversely, from good to bad. It should come about for visa as the result not of are the kinds to purpose vice, but of some great error or frailty, in a character either such as we have described, or better rather than worse. The practice of the stage bears out our view. -- XIII. By double plots, Aristotle is referring to serious plays that have a disaster in the middle, but a happy ending. Aristotle considers these to other half, be inferior, but admits that many people prefer them. In the second rank comes the kind of tragedy which some place first. Like the Odyssey, it has a double thread of kinds according plot, and also an opposite catastrophe for covering the good and for according to purpose the bad.

It is accounted the best because of the college, weakness of the spectators; for the poet is guided in what he writes by the wishes of his audience. The pleasure, however, thence derived is not the true tragic pleasure. What Are The? It is proper rather to Comedy, where those who, in the piece, are the deadliest enemies -- like Orestes and Aegisthus -- quit the stage as friends at the close, and no one slays or is adaptive of animals, slain. What Are The? -- XIII This only covering letter for visa, makes sense if you share Aristotle's assumption that the purpose of serious drama is to make you have a good scare and what are the kinds to purpose, a good cry and go back to thinking that real-life is more fair. Aristotle goes on to explain that the best plots and the best scripts themselves arouse pity and fear, and prompt, that the best plays don't even need the special effects. Fear and pity may be aroused by spectacular means; but they may also result from the inner structure of the piece, which is the better way, and indicates a superior poet. For the plot ought to be so constructed that, even without the aid of the what are the, eye, he who hears the tale told will thrill with horror and melt to pity at what takes place. This is the impression we should receive from hearing the story of the Oedipus. -- XIV. Aristotle goes on. Let us then determine what are the circumstances which strike us as terrible or pitiful. -- XIV They are aroused especially when people kill friends or family. The killer may or may not know what he/she is doing.

It can happen onstage, or be discovered, as (Aristotle points out) in Oedipus the death, King. Aristotle was a product of his times. In respect of Character there are four things to what, be aimed at. First, and most important, it must be good. Now any speech or action that manifests moral purpose of any kind will be expressive of adaptive character: the character will be good if the purpose is what kinds to purpose, good. This rule is relative to each class. Even a woman may be good, and also a slave; though the woman may be said to be an inferior being, and the slave quite worthless. The second thing to aim at is propriety. There is a type of manly valor; but valor in a woman, or unscrupulous cleverness is inappropriate. -- XV. We do not have to be left-wing activists or injustice-collectors to college essays, despise this kind of sexism and classism.

But the truth is that on the Greek stage, the what are the, women are as interesting, sympathetic, intelligent and brave as the men -- an obvious fact that Aristotle ignores. Aristotle goes on to say that characters should be believable, the kinds of people we meet in life, and that characters should be consistent. Aristotle has a problem with Euripides's Iphegenia in Aulis, which tells the story of a sudden decision for vault college essays heroic altruism. It remains to speak of kinds of essay to purpose Diction and Thought, the other parts of Tragedy having been already discussed. Walden Prompt? Concerning Thought, we may assume what is said in what are the of essay according to purpose the Rhetoric, to features in aquatic, which inquiry the are the of essay according to purpose, subject more strictly belongs. Under Thought is included every effect which has to iron jawed, be produced by what according to purpose speech, the subdivisions being: proof and essay death, refutation; the excitation of the feelings, such as pity, fear, anger, and of essay, the like; the suggestion of covering letter importance or its opposite. Now, it is evident that the dramatic incidents must be treated from the same points of view as the dramatic speeches, when the what, object is to evoke the sense of pity, fear, importance, or probability. -- XIX. Aristotle talks about realism, which is a curious topic when talking about godfather death tales from according to purpose Greek mythology. Further, if it be objected that the description is not true to fact, the poet may perhaps reply, But the objects are as they ought to be; just as Sophocles said that he drew men as they ought to be; Euripides, as they are. In this way the objection may be met.

If, however, the vault college essays, representation be of neither kind, the poet may answer, This is how men say the thing is, applies to tales about the gods. It may well be that these stories are not higher than fact nor yet true to fact: they are, very possibly, what Xenophanes says of them. What Are The Kinds Of Essay According To Purpose? -- XXV. Xenophanes came out and said it -- the tales of Greek Mythology are fiction. Aristotle knows this is important, but once again, he avoided the rough issue. Somebody may ask you about Sophocles portraying people as they should be, and Euripides portraying people as they are. Sophocles shows Oedipus as gracious, capable, and altruistic.

Sophocles has Ajax write a magnificent suicide note and end a useful life rather than live with the half lives, stigma of kinds of essay mental illness. Sophocles has Orestes kill his own mother without a lick of regret, making a speech about how everybody who breaks any law should be summarily executed. Euripides, by vault college contrast, shows a woman murdering her two children in cold blood just to get back at their father. You can have fun examining this further. I think I understand. Aristotle got paid to tell young people that if they lived good lives, really bad things wouldn't happen to them. To explain why they saw really bad things happening to good people onstage, Aristotle gave two (contradictory) answers.

1. When something really bad happens to what are the kinds of essay, a good person in adaptive of animals in aquatic a tragedy, it is because that person has a tragic flaw. 2. When something really bad happens to a good person in a tragedy, it is just make-believe. It is so you can have a good scare and what, a good cry. This gets these emotions out of your system. Jawed Angels Essay Question? You can go back to the real world, where life is what kinds to purpose, fair. It's bunk, intended to keep people from complaining about Sophocles's devastating theme. Aristotle may have been the thoreau walden essay, first schoolteacher to smokescreen Sophocles's message that the gods might be malicious. He may have thought he was right to do so.

Aristotle's popularity among schoolteachers has helped hide Sophocles's grim idea. Even today, students are forced to write essays about tragic flaws and what are the kinds according to purpose, purging pity and fear. Somehow, hybris (ungodly pride, arrogance, and so forth) has come to be identified as the usual tragic fault. I cannot understand why -- the idea does not seem to be Aristotle's. But whenever something bad happens to a basically good person in a tragedy, students are invited to see hybris. (Hubris is the same word; the Greek letter upsilon looks like our Y and vault, is its origin, but the sound was more like the uhh that I make when I have no idea what to say.) In Antigone , Sophocles has the chorus specifically call Creon on his hybris, i.e., his impious decree intended to promote national security.

I have seen this section from Antigone quoted and kinds of essay according to purpose, said to be from Oedipus the letter, King, as proof that Oedipus has a tragic flaw of what according to purpose hybris. In Aeschylus's Agamemnon , the murderess gets the victim to do a vainglorious, un-Greek walk down a red carpet in order to gain public support after the murder. Other characters (Aeschylus's Prometheus, the victims of Euripides's Dionysus) are punished wrongfully for standing up for what most of us would say is common sense and genuine goodness. It is hard to generalize this. Interestingly, I can't find the idea of hybris in Aristotle's Poetics. During the sixties, we especially resented being told that Antigone's act of civil disobedience / political protest was hybris. You can't defend yourself against an accusation of lives hybris.

I am an honest physician who engages in public debates. When I catch somebody deliberately deceiving the what of essay to purpose, public, they never defend their cases on the facts, but almost always call me arrogant or elitist. Essay? (If you have no case, shout hybris!) Through my Shakespeare site, I often get requests, What is Hamlet's tragic flaw?, etc., etc. I tell people that they're asking the wrong question, and to are the kinds, look instead at what the other lives, author is really saying about life. If Aristotle and his successors had been free to speak the truth clearly, here are some points that would come up in discussion and with which most students (then and now) would probably agree. In our world, very bad things do sometimes happen to very good people. Your chief security comes from what people know you can do well.

This results in turn from your natural abilities, your effort, and your good character. It's safest, and the best strategy, to try to be a good person. It's fun to be scared at shows, and to cry. But we don't want to be rid of these emotions, but to feel them most intensely. Perhaps we can also bring back, from a good play or movie, something that will help us make sense of what kinds of essay ourselves, our neighbors, and our world. Oedipus seeks the truth about himself despite the warnings that it will not bring him happiness. We cannot blame Aristotle for the centuries of ignorance during which his authority was used to limit free inquiry.

But today, most people admire those who bravely seek the truth about nature, and about themselves. It is a modern, rather than an Aristotelian, theme. Greek serious drama (tragedy) reaches an intensity that remains unsurpassed. Other Lives? Serious drama did go on, after the Greeks, to become richer in of essay according many ways, including variety of plot, character, and theme. Much of the power of serious literature (like tragedy, and like the comedies of essay godfather Aristophanes and are the of essay, Shakespeare) comes from the philosophical issues that it raises. We do not have to be frightened when we run into a theme with which we disagree. If history teaches us anything, it is that we need to be more frightened of iron jawed people who would restrict the free sharing of are the of essay ideas, or force a stupid right-wing or left-wing ideology on us.

Young people naturally discuss whether the stories they hear in church are true, and perhaps even whether the universe itself might be malevolent. (Today's teens enjoy the tongue-in-cheek adventure game, Call of Cthulhu, in which the spiritual powers of the universe are insanely cruel, though less subtle.) Whether or not Sophocles was serious in putting this latter idea forward, simply recognizing that he has done so will not corrupt the morals of young people. Every person must find his or her own answer to the mystery of why bad things happen to good people in a universe supposedly under God's control. Yet even if people reach different conclusions, and express them freely, people can usually still live and work together in peace and essay half lives, good-will. Few thinking people, then or now, will credit the idea that Apollo, or one of his counterparts, deliberately engineers disasters. But Sophocles's theme rings partially true to those of what kinds according to purpose us who approach the universe with a sense of essay other lives awe, as a mystery where perhaps there is more than there appears to be. They may not have told you that hamartia is the word used in what kinds to purpose the original Greek of the New Testament for essay death sin. What Of Essay To Purpose? The King James Version has 172 instances. Jim Donahoe's essay on essays Oedipus's tragic flaw is no longer online.

In the end however, Oedipus becomes more humble and accepts his fate. He becomes a better person and is better off after his fall. Dr. Black, from are the to purpose Malaspina College (link now down) wrote that Oedipus's flaw is his special ability to solve riddles, his detective ability, one might say, or his intellect. Yet this is a form of hubris -- the belief that one can understand, read, predict, control the covering, future etc. Are The To Purpose? through one's native wit, and this is what brings him down, despite several warnings to give up the hunt. Reason = Apollo. Myth Man.

Oedipus. Essay Godfather? brought about his own downfall because of his excessive obsession to know himself. I'm honored to be the kinds of essay, source of his quotation (Thus, some say that the moral of the story is, Even if you try to thwart your destiny, you won't succeed.). Link is now down. University of Pennsylvania classics department essay on Oedipus's tragic flaw . in this account, his basic flaw is his lack of knowledge about his own identity. The writer is fair enough to point out that unlike other tragic heroes, Oedipus bears no responsibility for his flaw.

The whole business of 'tragic flaws' is something that English and Drama teachers have got hold of from some book they read when they were students. No one these days who has actually studied Greek tragedy believes there is any such thing. Tragic Flaws . . I realized something quite interesting: just about everything Aristle says about tragic heroes is wrong. Aristotle had postulated the principle of the tragic flaw in tragedy.

A hero, who is thoreau walden essay prompt, mostly good, makes some sort of mistake related to acharacter flaw, usually hybris or pride. However, from what I read, I realised that tragic heroes are almost never brought down by kinds of essay flaws or by hybris . In fact, in for visa most cases, the protagonist is actually destroyed by his or her virtues. In puzzling over this, I realised that Aristotle is, in according to purpose fact, not trying to explain exactly what is happening in tragedy but what should be happening. Letter For Visa? He is answering a very specific challenge to the very existence of what are the kinds tragedy presented by Plato in the Republic Book III. Plato had argued that tragedy corrupted the audience. Arthur Miller wrote, The flaw, or crack in the character [of Oedipus], is vault, really nothing -- and need be nothing -- but his inherent unwillingness to remain passive in the face of what he conceives to be a challenge to his dignity, his image of his rightful status. Only the what of essay according to purpose, passive, only those who accept their lots without active retaliation, are 'flawless.' Most of us are in that category. Miller adds that the terror and the fear that is classically associated with tragedy comes from questioning the unquestioned. Maybe this is more about Miller than about Sophocles -- but it was a good thought for the conformist, self-satisfied Fifties. Oedipus -- heroic-fantasy style painting. Visitors send me this question from time to time. If being a contemporary American means being focused on kinds to purpose dirty TV sitcoms, greed, casual sex, big-money sports, shout-and-pout grievance-group politics, televangelism, professional wrestling, crybabies, slot machines, postmodernism, political action committees, and thoreau walden essay, war on drugs profiteering. then the answer is probably Nothing. If a contemporary American can still ask, If there is a God, why do horrible things happen to perfectly good people? And how do we explain this to children? -- then the answer is maybe that Sophocles deals with basic human issues. A week after setting up this site, people are already writing me to tell me that I am wrong, but not why. Each of three teachers has told me that The class agreed Oedipus caused his own problem. I use the term immoral for the idea that the gods deliberately set up horrible disasters, simply for lack of a better English word. And it seems appropriate to me. (Cliff Notes used the word moral for the idea that the gods are fair and are the kinds, decent.) If you can think of a better one, please let me know. If you are a student writing on Oedipus , perhaps you can find a typically Greek solution. Athenians often constructed sentences in essay godfather death the form of according One the one hand ( men ). and on the other hand ( de ). Argue both sides. It'll be fun and prevent trouble.

If your instructor is a proponent of one of the three sides of the culture war, you can make him/her happy and covering letter, still be honest. If your instructor is a conservative religionist (Religious Right, etc., etc.), point out how Sophocles recognizes the what kinds to purpose, falsity of old, heathen mythologies, how their false idols were cruel and letter, amoral, etc., etc. If your instructor is a left-wing social-activist / postmodernist focused on what kinds of essay according grievance-group politics, point out how Sophocles challenges the traditional belief structures of the oppressive patriarchy, etc., etc. If your instructor is a scientific naturalist, argue that Sophocles actually knew that Greek mythology, and all the talk about gods and so forth, was bunk, and maybe this is what he is really telling us. If you are a teacher taking a traditional classroom approach to Oedipus the King, be ready for these questions from your students. Cliff Notes, which is essay other half, as usual pretty good, warns that overemphasis on a search for the decisive flaw in the protagonist as the key factor for understanding the tragedy can lead to superficial or false interpretations.

The author also warns that Aristotle's approach is sometimes too artificial or formula-prone in its conclusions. He goes on to say that some people say Oedipus's tragic flaw is what are the according, his anger (at Laius, at Tiresias), his trying to escape his destiny, and his pride and vault college essays, determination in what are the kinds to purpose trying to get the herdsman to features in aquatic, tell the truth. (The author adds that Sophocles believes that the universe is fundamentally a profoundly moral place, though I can't tell why.) Why all the different supposed tragic flaws? This isn't right, but it's a fact of life, and vault college essays, if you didn't know it, you have been protected and are naive. Sophocles presents Oedipus's killing of Laius as self-defense. What kind of sense does this make if Sophocles wants us to think Oedipus caused his own downfall? Today, if a psychic went on the air and accused a decent, respected government official of murder and incest, people would be furious and believe that this is crooked politics. Oedipus is right to kinds of essay to purpose, think this and to be very angry, though I think (as the Chorus does) that he goes too far in assuming Creon is behind it. Why would anybody think Oedipus should NOT be suspicious and angry?

If Oedipus had not tried hard to get to the truth, there would have been no play. Oedipus loses his temper with Creon, and the Chorus says he is over-reacting, but not that this causes his disaster. The Chorus sings about the need to revere the gods, but never that Oedipus has not done do. In fact, the essay half, Chorus, representing public opinion, never says Oedipus caused his disaster. This is in spectacular contrast to are the to purpose, the ending of Antigone, where the college, Chorus sings about Creon's hybris (I refuse to allow proper religious burial rites for a man who endangered National Security, this will make him an example and of essay to purpose, keep our people safe) and how it caused his ruin (Religion and conscience and decency and human love take precedence over supposed National Security.) Does the word hybris even appear in Aristotle's Poetics? The site went up in 1998, and has proved very popular. Most of my correspondents express appreciation -- especially fellow-educators. At least I'm glad people still feel strongly enough about classical literature to send hate mail. What Are The Kinds? However, not one of them (or anyone else) has ever tried to explain why I am wrong -- and that leads me to draw the obvious conclusion.

If you have no case, shout hybris . If you are a student who has been punished for using this website, please contact me and I'll probably be able to take care of it for iron angels question you. Whatever you decide, I hope that everybody enjoys Sophocles's Oedipus the King, and what according to purpose, the Greek custom of free intellectual inquiry, as much as I have! Health and friendship! This isn't the first time that everybody's told me that conventional wisdom is right and that I'm wrong, but not why. In the 1970's, I said: Peptic ulcer craters contain spiral bacteria, which are part of the process. Patients presenting with fibromyalgia symptoms have a real disease.

Nitrates do not dilate atherosclerotic coronary arteries. Bismuth has a specific, powerful effect on indigestion apart from its antacid effect. A large percentage of SIDS deaths are intentional or negligent homicides, and a baby can smother by overling or on a mattress or big toy. William Blake's private papers show that psychosis does not necessarily mean disability or lack of insight. I'm no Teiresias.

But except for the last (where people are still telling me I'm wrong, but not why), I've been glad that common sense and a little basic understanding of the world eventually wins out over academic dogma. Features In Aquatic. The things you remember and the things you forget have no real order of importance. For example, I can’t quite remember on that night in May 1997 when I was sure we were going to win.

But I do remember - vividly - my order at Bridgend’s Olympic Kebab House. It was a large donner, with cabbage, garlic and chilli sauce. Not a classic New Labour celebration I suppose. But there’s another reason to what kinds of essay according, think back too. Because it challenges us to think about the vault future. What Kinds Of Essay According To Purpose. That’s where we were 20 years ago, where will we be in 20 years time? Conference, we’ve got some work to do. Essay Death. Look at the challenges ahead of us just in the coming three years. The first time for 100 years that happened.

Within weeks, I was there holding a public meeting talking to people about why that had happened. What Are The Of Essay To Purpose. We took those lessons, and it changed the way we approached the thoreau walden next election. And in May last year, Rebecca Evans beat the Tories in Gower. Just as Ann Jones smashed the Tories in the Vale of Clwyd. And Carl Sargeant steamrollered the are the according Tories in Alyn Deeside. And Jane Hutt hammered the other Tories in what are the of essay according to purpose, the Vale of Glamorgan.

And Hannah Blythyn destroyed them in Delyn. Lesley Griffiths walloped them in Wrexham. And Julie Morgan crushed them in Cardiff North. Every single Labour / Tory marginal went Red. Thank you to our brilliant candidates, now AMs and their campaign teams for allowing us to govern once more. That decision to join this party is a decision about one simple thing - that we want to make the world a fairer place. That’s what it all comes down to. We may explain that idea in different ways - better schools, the NHS, a cleaner environment, an ethical foreign policy, safer streets - but that is what it comes back to, this issue of fairness.

The thought that we can let the Tories off the hook, now more than ever, would be unforgivable. Their record is a disgrace. Broken promise after broken promise. They promised austerity would balance the are the to purpose books. But, they are failing to provide the half basic helping hand to get our economy growing again. A budget that UKIP, Plaid and the Tories voted against - but a budget that will put more nurses onto hospital wards, more families into good homes and secure faster treatment for countless patients. That is Welsh Labour delivering in Government. A week later, Philip Hammond, presented the UK Government Spring Budget. You may have read about it. It didn’t go so well. “Tories Break Tax Vow” is not a Telegraph front page Tory Chancellors dream about. Essays. “Rob the Builder” - read another headline. “Spite Van Man” - went another. “No Laughing Matter” said the Daily Mail.

And, so a few days later he had another go. The second time was slightly better - he was only humiliated on 90% of the front pages. “May Forces Hammond into Budget U-turn” And my personal favourite: “Hammond Egg on according to purpose His Face” Well, you know what they say - if at first you don’t succeed, then sky diving probably isn’t for you. Conference it would be funny if it wasn’t so serious. Cameron’s gambles took us out of Europe, Hammond’s fumbles are damaging our economy and now May’s stumbles are pushing Scotland to the exit door. Of Animals. Conference, I have been dealing with the word Brexit for much longer than the rest of are the according to purpose you. For Visa. It was, for many months, what my then infant daughter called breakfast. I know she’s not the only one to have made that mistake. For many years I thought I’d heard the last of that dreaded word. But, no. So once again every morning begins with Brexit.

On a serious note, there are important days ahead. On Wednesday, the are the according Prime Minister will formally signal the UK’s intention to leave the European Union by triggering Article 50. I know there are other views, but I firmly believe we have to get real about of animals this - Brexit is happening. We must respect the will of the people. The task for us now, is to make a success of that process. According. That has been the mission of our Government in essay, recent months.

Through our White Paper, bilaterals with the Prime Minister and others - through Joint Ministerial Committees and through visits to Brussels and beyond. We are making the case for what Wales needs - and it centres on one thing. Full and unfettered access to the Single Market. What Are The Kinds Of Essay According. That is what will give our businesses the best chance to walden prompt, succeed, and will allow us to secure growth and prosperity in the future. What To Purpose. We have all heard about the uncertainty that surrounds the Ford plant in my home constituency of Bridgend - every single engine made in that factory is exported to Europe. Don’t tell me, or anyone in that factory that the kind of Brexit we negotiate is a dry academic exercise. It’s the difference between good, secure work and walden essay prompt, an uncertain future for countless families. And that story is replicated thousands of times over - all across Wales in workplaces large and small. I don’t pretend that we have all the answers, but as the months have ticked by, it has become increasingly clear that our consistent, and what kinds of essay according, determined stance on Brexit is adaptive features of animals in aquatic, having an kinds to purpose, impact.

On transition arrangements, on workers’ rights, and more and more in godfather death, relation to Single Market access, others are rallying to our standard. Kinds Of Essay. And that is because we are making a common sense case for the economic good of this country. But, the UK Government has got to meet us half way on this. They’ve got to keep the hard Brexiteers locked in the attic. And they’ve got to move into the 21st Century.

Too many in Whitehall have seen Brexit as an opportunity to turn back the clock to pre-devolution days. To grab hold of powers they thought never should have been relinquished. The Great Reform Bill will be a huge - and potentially last opportunity for adaptive features of animals in aquatic the Tory Government to what are the according, prove they understand just what is at stake. There can be no landgrab on powers - and new frameworks on agriculture, on trade and the environment - they must be agreed and not imposed. Essay Godfather. Already the Tories have gifted the SNP the advantage through their careless dealings with the kinds of essay according nations and regions of half this country.

For the sake of the union, this cannot carry on. For now, we remain committed to this imperfect and frustrating process, but Wales must see our willing engagement recognised in the final negotiating position. And there are bigger questions for us to answer, for which Brexit has merely been a catalyst. For too long, the Labour Party - outside of what kinds of essay Wales - has been afraid to grasp the nettle when it comes to the constitutional future of the UK. We’ve been too defensive, confusing support with the status quo with support for the union. Well, it has long been my belief that there’s nothing more certain of destabilising the for visa union than trying to kinds of essay according to purpose, hang on to the for visa status quo. And increasingly the party is alive to this - and it is right that Labour must show leadership on this agenda. That is why I am delighted that Kezia Dugdale, Gordon Brown, Sadiq Khan, Andy Burnham and others have agreed to start the process of kinds of essay to purpose Constitutional Convention that will inject fresh urgency into other this debate. This work begins in earnest next week with a Conference in Cardiff, so on the very day the Prime Minister sends a letter to of essay according, Brussels exiting us from one union - Labour will be gathering together to try and re-imagine what this United Kingdom may look like in other half, the future. Conference, let me just say one thing more on the issue of Brexit, and it is about the way our political discourse has changed so markedly in recent months. I think it is kinds of essay to purpose, right for college essays us to ask ourselves if we have become detached from some of the are the kinds of essay to purpose communities we seek to represent.

There are people who used to vote Labour who are experiencing a sense of loss that is real and which is profound - and which needs to be addressed. In his book, A Hillbilly Elegy, JD Vance talks about the experience of essay prompt growing up poor - and he says “whenever people ask me what I’d most like to are the kinds of essay according, change about the working class, I say, “The feeling that our choices don’t matter.” That’s a challenge that should speak to us in college, Wales, just as much as it does to Vance’s audience in the States. That re-examination of what we’re about should always be an are the of essay according to purpose, urgent and ongoing process for godfather death a party of what of essay according to purpose Government. But, I get deeply concerned when I hear people in our party saying we should therefore side-line some of our fundamental principles. Godfather. So, don’t let anyone tell you that securing rights for minorities - or standing up for the LGBT community is what are the of essay to purpose, anything other than the core business of any Labour movement worthy of the name. Don’t let anyone tell you we should be selling our EU citizens - our friends, neighbours, relatives and colleagues - down the river in the Brexit negotiations. Don’t let anyone tell you we should worry less about the refugee children on our doorstep, denied access to shelter by a cowardly Tory Government. Iron Angels Question. We have fought for the rights of those children, as we fought for the ones that came before, and we must always lead the fight for are the according to purpose those who need our help. Covering For Visa. Don’t let anyone tell you that our commitment to all women shortlists, gender equality and ending domestic violence against women is anything other than core business for are the of essay to purpose this party.

Don’t let anyone tell you that our friend and colleague Jo Cox lost her life to anything but an vault, act of political extremist violence. And don’t let that death pass in vain. There is more that unites us than divides us, but it is vital for what of essay according this party to take that message to the country. Conference, our party was founded to jawed angels essay, flatten prejudice and inequality and it flourishes when we side with modernity and progress and when work to what, lift up our brothers and sisters from their struggles. So, yes. Let’s challenge ourselves over what we’re doing, and saying, to who and walden, how. But, don’t ever surrender the fight for what kinds of essay to purpose good - because look around, Conference. College Essays. Without us, who will take these fights on? For all these reasons, and more, the Brexit challenge cannot be underestimated.

But, it cannot cloud everything. Last week I held one of my regular Carwyn Connect public meetings. This one was in Penygraig in the Rhondda. It was pretty packed. All ages. All walks of life. You know the only person who mentioned the word Brexit that night? We took over twenty questions - and the things people wanted to know about shouldn’t surprise us. Jobs, youth work, town centre regeneration, isolation and loneliness, the NHS, grassroots sport, tackling poverty, volunteering, supporting entrepreneurs, more and better apprenticeship programmes.

The daily bread of are the kinds according everyday life. And so it is everywhere I go in Wales - Llanrwst, Haverfordwest, Gorseinon - hundreds of people concerned for their future. Looking for a fair shake of the dice. What is at the heart of everything we have been asked for, and everything we promised to deliver? A Fair Deal. The Welsh people are not unreasonable in their demands - what they want is fairness. Letter. And Conference, in May in the local elections that is what Welsh Labour councils will offer to what are the of essay according to purpose, the people of this country - a Fair Deal. Huge budget cuts handed down by the Tories to Wales mean that the iron jawed financial context of what kinds of essay to purpose public services has changed radically in a short space of time.

Councils face increasing demand but ever diminishing resources. Vault College. ‘Business as usual’ is no longer an option, and it is Welsh Labour in council chambers up and what are the to purpose, down Wales, embracing this challenge and showing that there is a different way. They have innovated to deliver the best services to the people they represent. All the while ensuring that Labour values of thoreau fairness, community and social justice are the driving force of that innovation. - In Cardiff we saw the creation of ‘Cyd Cymru’ an energy collective that helped 4,000 households switch to a cheaper energy tariff, saving householders an average of ?235 each. - Flintshire are taking advantage of the abolition of the according Right to Buy and are investing in building housing once again. Essay Half Lives. - My own council in Bridgend has invested in new Flying Start centres in Brackla, Cefn Glas, Garth, Lewistown, Blackmill, Sarn and Wildmill helping over 1,000 children and their families. - Barry Island has been transformed thanks to our Welsh Labour council driving through ambitious regeneration plans and boosting tourism - Barry doesn’t just look difference under a Labour council, it feels different too. That’s the confidence a Welsh Labour council working with a Welsh Labour Government can deliver. And there is more.

Across Wales Welsh Labour councils are constantly improving services: - Giving local people a stake in what are the kinds of essay according to purpose, how those services are delivered, - Working and walden, collaborating with others to what kinds of essay according, get the best value, - And solving problems before they arise by investing in half lives, early intervention and prevention. Working in what are the of essay, partnership, the Welsh Labour Government and Welsh Labour councils are delivering for our children - our schools are now reporting their best ever exam results. Over the essay death last 5 years, pupils getting 5 good GCSEs… up by 13% in RCT. According To Purpose. Up 10% in Torfaen. Up 14% in Merthyr Tydfil. And the gap between the of animals richest and what are the kinds according to purpose, poorest children in closing at godfather death, every key stage - let this sink in - pupils in kinds according to purpose, the most deprived areas are performing better than similar pupils in the rest of the UK. Conference that is Welsh Labour delivering a Fair Deal for death our children. It is because of kinds of essay according to purpose our commitment to fairness that I want to mention something else today. The tenacious and dignified campaign being fought by Carolyn Harris on funeral costs for children - it has been an example to iron jawed essay question, us all. The councils and businesses that have rallied to your call deserve praise and thanks.

And today I am pleased to confirm that the Welsh Labour Government will step in, and make sure that burial charges for children will no longer apply in Welsh communities. What Kinds According. It is the right thing to do, but it took you, Carolyn, to shine a light on lives this issue - so thank you. Are The Kinds. Not just in Local Government, but in the Welsh Parliament too - a Fair Deal for Wales. Brexit or no Brexit, we promised to deliver on our commitments, so Conference how are we getting on? In the last Assembly we created 150,000 jobs - 15,000 young people were found work through the Jobs Growth Wales programme. An unparalleled success story for Wales. But, we heard the of animals in aquatic complaint from the older population - how can we find new work, we’ve paid in, where is our support. And so, we have announced new plans for what to purpose 100,000 all-age apprenticeships in Wales - a Fair Deal for all people looking for good work. Jawed Angels Essay. For me, being in government is about changing people's lives for the better. By making the services that individuals, families and businesses rely on stronger and what are the kinds of essay according, more reliable. Power for a purpose.

And so over the next few years I want us to utilise the covering letter new powers we are gaining over our railways and our bus network - to build a world class transport system in Wales. One that is kinds to purpose, truly integrated, genuinely sustainable and one that can better connect our communities and our economy. Essay Half. One that can help make real our ambition of better jobs closer to home. And today I can announce three measures that will make a tangible difference to passengers on our public transport network. As part of the work to prepare for the new rail franchise in 2018, we will ensure that every train on the Wales and Borders franchise will be equipped with free wifi by September this year. In addition to what are the of essay, this, we will begin to roll out free wifi to train stations across Wales, starting with fifty of the busiest stations in godfather, Wales over what are the according to purpose, the next six months. And to strengthen bus services I am today announcing a twelve month pilot of free weekend travel on our long distance TrawsCymru service to encourage more people to travel on the network. In healthcare, we knew that the jawed angels essay Tory concept of a Cancer Drugs Fund was resolutely unfair. What Of Essay To Purpose. Independent studies showed it actually cost lives. Access to approved drugs in Wales was faster, and our New Treatments Fund will give even greater chances to those who need them.

But, we saw too that occasionally a post-code lottery worked against people who needed the most cutting edge and specialist treatment and drugs. Vault College Essays. So this week our Health Secretary Vaughan Gething, announced a new approach to Individual Patient Requests. And now people who need it most will now have better, fairer access to to purpose, lifesaving drugs. College. Conference, as we face the what are the kinds according to purpose local elections in a few short weeks, we shouldn’t need a single shred of motivation more than what the letter Tories tried to do to our NHS in Wales. They used our health service as a punch bag in the right-wing press. A handy distraction from their own catastrophic mistakes, which only now are coming to light.

We’ve never shied away from honest assessment of the NHS in Wales. Indeed, it is the reports we commission ourselves that give us the what hardest lessons - but we’re comfortable with that. Thoreau. We want the best for patients, we want a service fit for the future. No-one is more impatient for improvements than us. But as yet another independent report shows Wales performing as well or better than the other health systems in the UK, how often do we need to are the kinds of essay according to purpose, tell ourselves not to be taken in?

When it comes to how we view our own country, we need to adaptive features of animals, be a little less RS Thomas, and a little bit more Cerys Matthews. We owe it to our healthcare workers to bury the Tory lies once and for are the kinds all, and to celebrate their achievements, their commitment and dedication. Adaptive. Let’s look at what we’re doing. Waiting times going down. Ambulance performance going up - outstripping every other country in the UK. The average response time to emergency calls is now less than five minutes. Conference, let’s thank the ambulance service for are the that remarkable turn-around.

With more and more patients now taking up cardiac rehabilitation after a heart attack, The British Heart Foundation has described Wales as a “world leader” Saving lives and improving lives. Better outcomes for stroke patients. Improvement in cancer performance - the number of patients treated now 40% higher than five years ago. And conference we already know that our record investment in social services has helped prevent the crisis we’ve seen in jawed angels essay, England. What Of Essay To Purpose. Our NHS every day striving to be faster, safer, better. And for the fourth successive month we are getting people home from hospital faster. We know that there is more to do, however. And so I am delighted today to announce a further ?20million for social care to ease the burden on the NHS, to ensure dignity for older and vault, vulnerable people and to give the staff the resources they need. Are The Of Essay. We are delivering for essay other half lives our social care, our NHS, and we will deliver for our schools and colleges too.

Conference, you know that education has always been my top priority. That is why I promised and delivered extra funding for our schools in the last Assembly - we protected our classrooms from the Tory cuts. And so we will do more to secure this progress and deliver for our children. An extra ?100million for our schools over this term - and we will put more money into the early years to support children from what are the kinds of essay according, deprived backgrounds. A Fair Deal for our children. We know that a major barrier for covering working parents is the availability of good quality childcare - and are the kinds of essay according to purpose, this week we announced our pilot projects, all over Wales, for the new 30-hour scheme we will deliver for the whole of Wales. Iron Jawed Angels. A Fair Deal for working parents.

We know that too many older people have had to face an impossible choice, between paying for their care, or passing on are the according to purpose something to their children. And so next month the capital limit for people going into care will rise again, and by 2021 it will have doubled to ?50,000. We are giving older people security they deserve. A Fair Deal for Older People. For small businesses, the Welsh Government will provide more than ?200m of support to iron jawed essay question, small business in the next financial year - providing help to more than three-quarters of businesses to are the kinds of essay to purpose, pay their rates.

Half of all small businesses in Wales will pay no rates at all as a result of our promises. Taken together our schemes more than match those on offer in England. For our small businesses - this is a Fair Deal for them, their customers and their staff. Conference, we are delivering on our promises. Brexit, or no Brexit, people expect a Fair Deal from vault college, Welsh Labour and a Fair Deal is what we want to give them.

Central to this is our economy. I made no apology for putting jobs and growth at the heart of are the kinds according to purpose successive budgets in the last Assembly, and I make no apology for putting it at the heart of our Brexit positions either. Unemployment in Wales now stands at prompt, 4.4% - lower than the UK average. Let that sink in. Lower than London, Scotland and most English regions. We know that on almost every measure that counts - prosperity, happiness, wellbeing - work matters. And when it would have been easier to grandstand, throw brickbats and rail against the unfairness - the Welsh Labour Government did everything we could to save the Welsh steel industry. We broke down political barriers. We travelled. From Port Talbot, to Downing Street to Flintshire, to what kinds according to purpose, Mumbai, Llanwern and Trostre.

We did not rest. We worked tirelessly with our colleagues in the trades unions, our MPs and features of animals, our local councils. We put money upfront and challenged others to match our commitment. What Are The Kinds Of Essay According. Conference, when we pinned those “Save Our Steel” badges to iron angels, our lapels, it wasn’t an empty gesture - it was a mission statement for us. and now Welsh steel is back on its feet. What Are The Kinds Of Essay. Welsh Labour delivered future for steel, when the Tories did nothing. Thousands remain in good, well-paid work and our communities can plan for vault the future once again. Of Essay. It’s not just about manufacturing, last month we created or safeguarded some 1600 jobs - as a direct result of the support offered by our Welsh Labour Government.

Like the support we have given to Dyfed Steels in Llanelli, creating 30 good new jobs and safeguarding 170 more. Or the 260 new jobs we are creating in partnership with Welsh I.C.E. in Wrexham in a new business hub for young entrepreneurs. But we know this is just one part of the challenge. But so does pay. So does fairness at work. So does security and productivity. And these are the challenges we will take on in this Assembly term. I want to make Wales a ‘fair work nation’ - where everyone can access better jobs closer to home - developing skills and careers, where we can all expect decent, life enhancing work - without exploitation or poverty, where we all build prosperity and all share in that prosperity. Death. And so I can announce today that next week I will be bringing together our social partners - the Wales TUC and what of essay according to purpose, businesses organisations - to discuss the establishment of a Fair Work Commission that can help us build an economy in features, which more people can have access to good work and are the kinds according to purpose, a secure income.

Conference, fairness is in other lives, everything we do. A Fair Deal for what are the according the people of Wales. They deserve nothing less than that. Godfather Death. More, and better jobs closer to home. Faster, fairer access to life saving drugs. More money into our classrooms, and more help for are the of essay to purpose the youngest and the least well off. More money in the bank accounts of older people going into care. Thoreau Walden Essay Prompt. The best childcare offer anywhere in the UK for working parents. More funding for what of essay according social care. No more child burial fees in Wales. A better deal for commuters.

And a fair deal at work. Essay Half. That is the of essay sort of vault Wales we were elected to what according to purpose, deliver. That is the sort of Wales we can be proud to talk about on the doorsteps in May. Features In Aquatic. We are the what of essay according to purpose party of working people, and the best hope for Britain. Our people are under pressure. Prompt. They need this party now more than ever before. Are The According. Now is the features time to keep on delivering, to keep on working and kinds according to purpose, show that this party is the party of Wales.

essays on acts 7 I can’t help it. When I read this chapter in the Book of Acts I think of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice—Walt Disney’s version. I see Mickey Mouse as the sorcerer’s apprentice, using magic powers to what are the kinds of essay to purpose do his work. And then, when Mickey tries to essay question put an end to it, it only grows and grows. So it is with the gospel. Jesus came to Israel as her Messiah.

There was a moment in time when Jesus’ kingdom appeared to kinds of essay according be appealing, but it wasn’t long before Israel’s leaders decided they wanted to have nothing to do with Jesus or with His kind of kingdom. Finally, they succeeded in putting Him to death. For Visa! “That’s that!,” they must have said to one another. But that wasn’t it. First of all; there was the problem of the empty tomb. Then there was the of essay, problem of the apostles, transformed by Pentecost. And now, there was the problem of a well-known beggar, crippled for adaptive features in aquatic, more than forty years, who was healed in the name of Jesus, the One the Jews of what are the kinds Jerusalem rejected and features in aquatic put to death. The harder they tried to “lay to rest” Jesus of what kinds of essay according Nazareth, His claims and His teachings, the jawed essay, more the matter multiplied. The story really begins at Pentecost, when the Spirit of what are the according God was poured out on at least the apostles, and perhaps other saints too.

Filled with the power of the Spirit, Peter and John were on their way to the temple to pray, at 3:00 in the afternoon. As they approached the vault college essays, temple gate, the gate called “ Beautiful,” they encountered a man being carried to what are the to purpose the gate on a stretcher, a man born lame, over forty years before. This man asked for money, but he received much more. In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, Peter instructed the man to get up and walk. The spectacle of this man clinging to Peter and John, following them as they walked, leaping and half lives walking and praising God, caused a large crowd to kinds of essay gather. Peter preached to godfather death this crowd, giving the according, gospel but not fully concluding, when a party of temple guards came up and arrested them.

And this is where our story takes up—in chapter 4 of the Book of Acts. The structure of our text, in its context, can be outlined as follows: The healing of the half, lame man—3:1-10 The proclamation of the gospel—3:11-26 The results of Peter’s preaching—4:1-4 The trial of Peter and what kinds according John—4:5-22 The response of the church to persecution—4:23-31. Our approach to this text will be to consider the results, positive and walden essay prompt negative, of the miracle and of the message of Peter as described in verses 1-4. Of Essay According To Purpose! We will then try to vault essays analyze the opposition to Peter and John and the response of these apostles to their accusors. Then we will consider the response of the church (or at least to what are the according to purpose those who gathered with Peter and godfather death John) to this opposition. Are The! Finally, we shall seek to determine the meaning and iron angels the application of these things to our own Christian experience today. the Miracle and the Message.

And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and of essay to purpose the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees, came upon them, 2 being greatly disturbed 27 because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in jawed angels essay, Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in jail until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the message believed; and are the kinds of essay to purpose the number of the men came to be about five thousand. As they 28 were speaking, the captain of the temple police 29 and some of angels essay question his men 30 arrived 31 and abruptly led Peter and John off to jail for the night. The trial was held the are the of essay according, next day. Peter and John were brought before the godfather, Sanhedrin, 32 the highest Jewish civil and religious court in what are the kinds according to purpose, the land. This should signal us to vault college essays the importance of this incident and to the intensity of the opposition. Several features of this opposition from the Jewish leaders need to be noted. First, the opposition comes from the highest, most powerful civil and political body of the Jews. That which the are the of essay to purpose, Jewish leaders oppose is of such import that they employ the efforts of the Sanhedrin to resist it.

Second, it is an opposition focused, for the time being, on the apostles, and specifically on essay godfather Peter and John. Only these two apostles were arrested 33 and brought to trial the following day. Third, Luke tells us the what are the to purpose, real reason for the arrest of Peter and John: they were teaching. They were teaching the people, Luke tells us. They were teaching them in the temple. Other Lives! And, they were teaching as their doctrine the resurrection of the dead through the person of Jesus of Nazareth, the what are the of essay, One Whom they had rejected and essays put to death. Teaching was regarded as the right possessed only by themselves or at are the of essay according least “franchised” by them to those whom they approved, those who had been trained by them and whose teaching would be acceptable to them. Peter and walden essay prompt John were not accredited by them, and yet they were teaching in the temple—their turf—and they were teaching the what according, people, the godfather death, masses. The ability to control men has always been based upon the ability to endoctrinate them.

34 For the people to be taught by someone other than themselves, and to be taught something different from that which they taught, was to lose control of are the kinds of essay their power over features of animals, the masses. This was a great threat to them. And this teaching was surely opposed to their doctrine. They had rejected Jesus as the true Messiah. They had finally convinced the masses that Jesus was a fraud so that the masses cried out for Jesus’ crucifixion.

They knew that Jesus had promised He would rise from the what kinds to purpose, dead (cf. Matthew 27:62-64) and that this would be the vault essays, “sign” which would prove He was who He claimed to what of essay according to purpose be (cf. Matthew 12:39-42). They had been unable to satisfactorily explain the empty tomb of Jesus, and now they could not explain the healing of the lame man in essay half, Jesus’ name. For the disciples to teach a resurrection from the dead through Jesus was to teach that the Jewish leaders had been wrong—dead wrong. The fourth characteristic of the opposition to Peter and John is closely related: those who carried the torch of opposition to the gospel change from the Pharisees in what of essay to purpose, the Gospels to iron jawed angels essay the Sadducees 35 in Acts. 36 If all the Jewish leaders of the nation resisted and are the kinds of essay according to purpose rejected the resurrection of Jesus in particular, many of these leaders rejected the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead in any form.

The Pharisees rejected the resurrection of Jesus, for this would have proven them wrong, but they at least held to college essays this doctrine in principle. What According To Purpose! The Sadducees rejected the resurrection of the dead in thoreau walden, general and in total. The Pharisees were the “pit bulls,” who were given a long leash by are the according, the Jewish leaders so that they persistently attacked, accused, and challenged Jesus at college every point. But now the Pharisees become virtually invisible and silent. Now, it is the kinds, Sadducees who take up the torch of the opposition. The “marriage” of the Pharisees and the Sadducees was short-lived, lasting only thoreau walden essay, long enough for are the kinds of essay to purpose, this coalition to put Jesus to death. But now, after His death (and resurrection!), the Pharisees have a falling out.

They seem to have lost heart. They will shortly turn to their former animosity and opposition to the Sadducees, as can be seen later on in Acts: But perceiving that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, Paul began crying out in the Council, “Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of half Pharisees; I am on trial for the hope and resurrection of the what are the of essay to purpose, dead!” And as he said this, there arose a dissension between the covering for visa, Pharisees and what kinds according Sadducees; and the assembly was divided. Essay Half! For the of essay to purpose, Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor an angel, nor a spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge them all. And there arose a great uproar; and some of the scribes of the Pharisaic party stood up and began to argue heatedly, saying, “We find nothing wrong with this man; suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?” (Acts 23:6-9). Fifth, the opposition of the angels question, Jewish leaders was a continuation and extension of their opposition to what are the kinds to purpose Jesus, though they may not have immediately recognized it as such. Jesus told His disciples there would persecution and essay resistance to their proclamation of the gospel: “If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also. But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me” (John 15:18-21). “And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not become anxious about how or what you should say; for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say” (Luke 12:11-12). “But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and according will persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for covering, My name’s sake. It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony. So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; for I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute” (Luke 21:12-15). Because of this, there are, as we might expect, distinct parallels between the response of these leaders to Jesus and their response to the apostles as we find in our text. Note some of these parallels: (1) Jesus, due to His teaching and miracles, was enthusiastically received by the masses, which quickly led to jealousy and reaction by the Jewish leaders (compare Matthew 5:1ff.; 8:1-17; Mark 1 with Acts 2:43, 47; 3:11; 4:2).

(2) These leaders began to accuse and to attack Jesus, especially pertaining to His authority and teaching (compare Matthew 9:2-3; 21:23 with Acts 4:7). (3) The Jewish leaders were accused of sin and misleading the people (Matthew chapters 5-7 and 23 with Acts 3:17; 4:11). (4) The religious leaders were especially indignant and finally took action when Jesus “took possession of the temple,” teaching and according to purpose healing people there, and thus threatening the position and authority of the leaders (compare Matthew 21:12-17; Luke 19:41-48 with Acts 4:1-22). (5) These leaders wanted to vault do away with Jesus, but they feared the crowds and were thus kept from are the of essay according achieving their goal of getting rid of Jesus (compare John 7:32, 45-49; 11:45-57; 12:9-11 with Acts 4:13-22). Having stated that the opposition of the Sanhedrin to the apostles was really a continuation of jawed essay their opposition to kinds of essay to purpose Jesus, I must also suggest that this fact was only gradually recognized by the Sanhedrin and Jewish leaders, as I understand our text. Vault Essays! Luke tells us they … “… began to what are the of essay to purpose recognize them as having been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13). As I understand these words, this means that these leaders only gradually realized that that which they opposed was a continuation of the initial “problem” they had with Jesus. Initially, I think the apostles’ teaching and ministry was opposed by the Sanhedrin for the same reasons that Jesus was opposed, but without realizing it was the same cause. We marvel at the statement that they were slow to recognize the apostles as having been with Jesus, but this can be explained. Many, perhaps most, of the top leaders of features of animals Israel (who were members of the Sanhedrin) did not come into contact with Jesus.

A man like Nicodemus, for example, sought out Jesus, but secretly. Are The Of Essay! These leaders did not wish to dignify Jesus by vault college essays, recognizing Him or His authority. They would not be seen in the crowds, listening to Him teach nor asking Him to perform some miracle. This would have indicated their own impotence. The top leaders of are the to purpose Israel had their ways of infiltrating and even of opposing Jesus, without direct involvement—the Pharisees. These men (more “laymen” than official religious leaders) followed Jesus everywhere, challenging and opposing Him and His ministry. Because of men like the Pharisees and of agents like the “temple police” (Acts 4:1; cf. John 7:32), the religious leaders did not have to “lower themselves” to directly deal with Jesus. This explains why Judas was needed as a “guide” to lead the temple guard and iron jawed angels essay the rest to the place where Jesus could be found and to of essay to purpose identify Him with a kiss (cf. Acts 1:16).

If these religious and civil leaders would not have recognized Jesus, how would they have recognized His followers? It was only as the teaching of these men became a matter of public knowledge that they “pieced together” the fact that these men, whom they were now opposing, were the followers of Jesus, and thus they were still fighting the One Whom they thought they had gotten rid of—Jesus of Nazareth. If the miracle and the message of Acts chapter 3 got the attention of the other half, Sanhedrin, it was not overlooked by the crowds. In spite of the opposition of Israel’s top leaders, many came to of essay faith in the Savior as a result of what happened there at essay godfather the temple. Luke tells us that there were now 5,000 men who believed. It would appear to be a much larger number than the 3,000 converts mentioned in Acts 2:41, since that number seems to include men and women, whereas the 5,000 figure appears to include only men. Some of this 5,000 may have been saved before the miracle and what are the of essay message in covering for visa, the temple (cf. 2:47), but we are given the distinct impression that while some opposed the gospel in chapter 4, many accepted it. The gospel was spreading, and the church was growing, in spite of (perhaps even because of) the opposition of Israel’s top leaders. Jesus had promised that it would come, and as always, He was right. What According To Purpose! Those who opposed Him and who had brought about His execution were now joining forces to do away with these two men who would cause trouble in essay half lives, the temple.

It was a veritable “who’s who” gathered against the apostles. The rulers and elders and what are the according to purpose scribes of Israel 37 were present, along with the high priest and the whole group of those of high-priestly descent. These people made up the Sanhedrin. Most of these we have seen before at vault the various trials of Jesus. There is no specific charge made against the apostles. Rather, the “trial” seems to be more of a “fishing expedition” in which the religious leaders seek to find some transgression of the what to purpose, law or of their traditions, giving them a handle on the situation.

There is plenty of innuendo and a great deal of intimidation evident here. Vault College! Perhaps they can at least succeed in scaring these men into giving up their activities. Putting the men in the center, they demand to know, “by what power, or in what name, have you done this?” The issue is a familiar one—that of the authority of the apostles. How often Jesus was challenged in the same way. As the what are the kinds according to purpose, highest religious body in the land, this group felt they should authorize all teaching and ministry in their midst, especially that which was done in the precints of the temple. Just who did these two “nobody’s” think they were, going into the temple as if they owned the place, doing and teaching whatever they wished? There is a clear indication that any ministry performed required their approval, which was not granted.

There may also be the inference that the power by which the miracle was performed (a miracle which they could not deny) was other than the power of God. 38 If they could establish any demonic involvement, they would have a case against covering letter for visa, these men. The question, as posed by the Sanhedrin, is an especially informative one for us, for it establishes a very important definition. It links the authority or power of someone with the kinds of essay, name by which they perform an adaptive of animals, act. In other words, to act in the name of Jesus is to act with His power, with His authority. In the Great Commission, Jesus told His disciples that all authority, both in heaven and on earth, was given to Him (Matthew 28:18).

Thus, when they ministered in are the kinds of essay according to purpose, His name, they ministered with His authority. The apostles’ authority was none other than that of Jesus. Peter’s response to death this challenge was incredibly short and to the point. It was a response empowered by the Holy Spirit (v. 8), just as Jesus had promised (Luke 12:12). He begins by pointing out that, far from doing any evil, a sick man has been made well (verse 9). This can hardly be a crime. And as to the power through which this benevolent deed was accomplished, it was that of Jesus the Christ, Jesus the Nazarene, the very One they had rejected and put to death, but whom God had raised from the dead (verse 10).

In rejecting Jesus of Nazareth, these leaders fulfilled the prophecy which foretold that the very cornerstone of God’s building would be rejected by are the of essay to purpose, the builders (verse 11, cited from Psalm 118:22). This cornerstone must be accepted, and those who rejected Him must repent, if they would be saved, for it was only through this name that one can be saved (verse 12). Jesus was the name by which the man was healed and through which the features, apostles ministered. Of Essay According To Purpose! Jesus was the only name by which any person could be saved. Thoreau Prompt! 39 The resurrection of Jesus proved these men to be wrong and Jesus to be the chief stone. The resurrection made the healing of this man possible, and so too the salvation of all who would believe. It should be said that this very brief explanation and citation from what are the of essay according Psalm 118 had a great deal of impact, for it served to remind these men of an encounter Jesus had with some of His opponents in for visa, Jerusalem shortly before His crucifixion. What Are The Kinds According! In Matthew chapter 21, we read of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem (verses 1-11), followed by features, His “cleansing of the temple” (verses 12-13) and His healing and teaching there (verse 14).

This resulted in the opposition of the chief priests and scribes (verse 15). When later challenged as to the authority by which Jesus acted (verse 23), He responded with a question of His own, pertaining to the authority with which John baptized (Matthew 21:23-32). It was evident that the religious leaders refused to accept John’s authority (but were unwilling to publicly reject it, due to the masses). Jesus told a story of a man with two sons, the first of which promised to what are the to purpose obey, but did not, and the second who rebelled, but later repented. The second son, Jesus extracted from His questioners, was the better. The second son, as well, seems to represent the Gentiles, while the first represents the Jews. It was the Gentiles, Jesus said indirectly, who would be given the college, position of the first.

Jesus then followed up with another parable in verses 33 and following, which depicted the sins of the leaders of what are the kinds of essay Israel (specifically, in the context, of those who were attacking and challenging Him). He told of a vineyard which the landowner (representing God) possessed and which he gave into the care of the vine-growers (the religious leaders of the nation Israel). Other! In his absence, the landowner sent back for the produce of his vineyard, but his servants were all beaten and sent away or put to death. What To Purpose! Finally, he sent his son (Jesus), whom they also rejected and put to death. Jesus got these men to say that when the owner of the vineyard returned, he would be expected to punish the evil vine-growers and to replace them with others.

It was at iron jawed angels essay question this point that Jesus turned their attention to Psalm 118:22 and to the fact that the what kinds of essay according, “ chief corner stone” would be rejected by the “ builders,” just as the son of the owner of the vineyard was rejected. Thoreau Walden! Jesus then went on to say to His opponents that the kingdom would be taken from are the of essay according to purpose them and would be given to another “nation producing the college, fruit of are the kinds according it” (21:43). Furthermore, this stone which they had rejected would fall upon them, destroying them (verse 44). Features! The chief priests and of essay to purpose scribes understood that Jesus was referring to them, and they wanted to covering seize Him on the spot, but they were prevented from doing so by the crowds who thought Jesus was a prophet (verses 45-46). For Peter to have brought up this passage from Psalm 118 was to remind these leaders of that unpleasant confrontation with Jesus. It was to say, in effect, “Jesus told you so.” How this citation must have stung in the ears of the Sanhedrin. The One they thought they had rid themselves of was still speaking to them, through the apostles. Just as the chief priests and scribes were powerless, at that time in what are the according, the past, to do away with Jesus, so now the Sanhedrin could not do with the half lives, followers of Jesus (Peter and John) as they wished. Their inability to act decisively was, I think, the result of a combination of factors.

First , the religious leaders were faced with the unpleasant (to them) fact that no crime had been committed. If anything, a good deed had been accomplished for what to purpose, which Peter and essays John should have been commended. Second , I believe these leaders were not in very good standing with Rome. Kinds According To Purpose! They had virtually forced Pilate to put Jesus to death when he wished to release Him (Acts 3:13). Iron Jawed Angels! If they suggested to the Roman rulers that the death of Jesus would bring peace and quiet to Jerusalem, this had not proven to be the case. They had “gone to the well” with Rome too often.

They could not go back, yet another time, this quickly. Third , there was a growing gap between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, which created a lack of kinds according unity among those on the Sanhedrin. The marriage between all the various political and religious factions which was formed to do away with Jesus was short-lived. Essay Question! Now the Pharisees were apparently backing off. These leaders did not have the what kinds, clout to pull off another execution. Fourth , the crowds were still in favor of the for visa, apostles, and the leaders knew they could not act without a measure of popular support. Peter and what are the to purpose John, along with the healed man, were sent out of the room. What a special delight to be left in that room, as it were, as a “fly on the wall,” overhearing the frustrated response of the Sanhedrin to the teaching and essay ministry of the apostles. 40 Notice that not even once did they deliberate as to what “the truth” of the matter might be.

They did not ask if they could have been wrong, and Jesus (and now His disciples) could have been right. They did not even discuss the resurrection of Jesus 41 and kinds of essay according whether or not it was true. Iron Angels Essay Question! They could not deny the fact that a most significant miracle had been performed. All they did was to consider the “consequences” of letting this movement continue. When the decision came as to whether they would pursue the “truth” or the “consequences” (to play on the name of what of essay to purpose a one-time television game show of years gone by), they opted to try to suppress the consequences, but not to consider the truth. The actions of the Sanhedrin can thus be described as “harassment,” for this was all they could do. They could (and did) threaten the apostles. They could attempt to features intimidate them. But they could not punish them. They were, at this point in what are the of essay, time, only able to hound them which they did to the best of their (well-developed) ability. The response of Peter and John to this trial is most enlightening.

In the first place, they were not intimidated as was expected. Their boldness 42 was disarming to the Sanhedrin, who expected these men to cower and to collapse under pressure. They were particularly impressed because it was not the education, status, or accreditation of these men which made them so bold. The only thing which these men knew about the two apostles was that they had been with Jesus. Their authority was directly tied, once again, to Jesus’ authority. Peter’s answer is other half a vitally important one, for it points the way to all who are forced to kinds according choose between obeying God or men. The choice between “right” and “wrong” is not left to Israel’s leaders. Peter’s words indicate that the vault essays, ultimatum given them forced them to choose between obeying their authority or God’s (verse 19). Whether or not their actions were wrong in the sight of God (a crime) was a matter which they must decide.

As a religious/political governing body, this was their God-given responsibility, one for which Peter implies (“before God”) they will give account. And the inference of Peter’s words is that regardless of their decision, Peter and John would persist in of essay according to purpose, preaching the gospel. When man’s authority over men contradicts obedience to God, men must disobey men and obey God. The threats of the Sanhedrin are thus swept aside due to a higher authority. No human authority can order another human to disobey God and expect him to obey man, rather than God. Jawed Essay Question! As stewards of the gospel, they cannot be silent. A Biblical Response to Persecution. 23 And when they had been released, they went to their own companions, and reported all that the chief priests and are the kinds of essay according the elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard this, they lifted their voices to God with one accord and said, “O Lord, it is Thou who DIDST MAKE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA, AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM, 25 who by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Thy servant, didst say, ‘WHY DID THE GENTILES RAGE, AND THE PEOPLES DEVISE FUTILE THINGS? 26 THE KINGS OF THE EARTH TOOK THEIR STAND, AND THE RULERS WERE GATHERED TOGETHER, AGAINST THE LORD, AND AGAINST HIS CHRIST.’

27 “For truly in this city there were gathered together against essays, Thy holy servant Jesus, whom Thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of are the according Israel. 28 to do whatever Thy hand and Thy purpose predestined to occur. 29 “And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Thy bond-servants may speak Thy word with all confidence. 30 while Thou dost extend Thy hand to heal, and adaptive features in aquatic signs and wonders take place through the are the kinds to purpose, name of Thy holy servant Jesus.” 31 And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and covering for visa they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak the word of God with boldness. After one final and futile attempt to intimidate and what according silence the apostles, they were released. Peter and John returned to a group referred to (as the NASB renders it) “ their own companions.” We do not know who all was included in this number, but surely it was not the covering for visa, entire church now consisting of 5,000 men. The two reported all that had happened to them and all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.

The first response of this group of believers may strike us as being a bit unusual. They immediately turned their attention to Old Testament Scriptures pertaining to according to purpose God as the Creator of adaptive all. Are The Of Essay According! The marginal note in the NASB might be understood to imply that the text referred to thoreau essay prompt can be found twice, once in Exodus 20:11 and what are the of essay according to purpose again in Psalm 146:6. This is far from the case. Essays! The truth that God is of essay according to purpose the. Creator of all is covering letter a theme frequently found throughout the Bible, Old Testament and of essay according to purpose New. 43.

In Deuteronomy chapter 4 God’s promises both to judge His people Israel, and to restore them, are buttressed by the reminder that the God who promises these things is the God who made the heavens and the earth (Deuteronomy 4:32-35). In response to Assyria’s threat to beseige Jerusalem and to take Israel captive, Hezekiah prayed to the Lord for deliverance from the kingdoms of walden essay men. What Are The According To Purpose! His prayer began, “O LORD, the vault college essays, God of what of essay according to purpose Israel, who art enthroned above the cheribim, Thou art the God, Thou alone, of all the iron jawed essay question, kingdoms of the earth. Thou hast made heaven and earth” (2 Kings 19:15). The psalmists (and others) contrasted the One True God, Maker of the heavens and the earth, with the gods of the are the of essay, nations made with human hands (cf.

Psalm 115). In Psalm 146, men are encouraged to place their trust in God, who made the heaven and vault essays the earth (verse 6), and kinds according to purpose not in princes, who are mere mortals (verses 3-4). Consistently in Isaiah (especially chapters 40 and following), the promise of Israel’s restoration and glorious salvation is guaranteed by the fact that the One who promised to essay other half lives accomplish this was both the Creator of the heavens and the earth, but also Israel’s Creator (cf. Isaiah 44:24). Jeremiah chapter 32 contains a rather striking parallel to our text. Here Jeremiah is what kinds of essay according to purpose thrown into jail by walden prompt, Zedekiah, king of kinds to purpose Judah, for prophesying that Jerusalem and Israel would fall to the Babylonians. The people of Israel were instructed not to resist this (32:1-6). In response to all that happened, Jeremiah prayed, beginning with these words: “‘Ah Lord God!

Behold, Thou hast made the heavens and the earth by features, Thy great power and by Thine outstretched arm! Nothing is of essay to purpose too difficult for essay godfather, Thee, …’” (Jeremiah 32:17). The key phrase, based on the fact that God is the Creator of the heavens and what are the according to purpose the earth is this: “ Nothing is too difficult for Thee.” To Jeremiah and to half the other Old Testament saints who found assurance in the fact that God is the Creator, the bottom line was simply that He who could create all things could also control them. Here he was predicting the downfall of Jerusalem, just as the what kinds, apostles would do centuries later. And just as the king was persecuting Jeremiah, so the political and religious authorities were persecuting the jawed, apostles. And just as Jeremiah prayed to the Creator of the heavens and the earth, so did the early church. The New Testament follows through with this theme of God as the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Paul wrote this in are the kinds according, his Epistle to the Colossians:

For in Him all things were created, both in thoreau, the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together (Colossians 1:16-17). Here, according to Paul, the Lord Jesus was the Creator, one with God the Creator. What Kinds Of Essay According! Paul represents Christ not only as the Creator of the heavens and the earth but of all things, including thrones and dominions. He is the Creator and the King of all things. He is the Creator of kingdoms.

As such, He is greater than all things and creatures, and essays thus He is in control of all things. All things were created by Him and they were also created for Him. He is also the sustainer of all things. No one is greater than this! In the final book of the New Testament, the Book of Revelation, God is according to purpose worshipped as the Creator of heaven and earth: And when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, to essay half lives Him who lives forever and ever, the what are the of essay according to purpose, twenty-four elders will fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and iron jawed angels essay will worship Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their crowns before the are the kinds according, throne, saying, “Worthy art Thou, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for Thou didst create all things, and because of Thy will they existed, and were created” (Revelation 4:9-11). What comfort the church could find in the fact that the God to whom they prayed was the Creator of essay other half heaven and earth, who was the Sovereign God, totally in are the kinds of essay according, control. 44 Would mere men threaten them and seek to stamp out God’s kingdom? It could not be done.

They were on the right side, the side of God, the Creator of heaven and earth. What could mere men do to them? The truth of other God as Creator was thus extended by the church to that of the futility of men’s efforts to according to purpose oppose the Creator and to resist the establishment of His kingdom. Essay Other Lives! Thus, the saints turned their thoughts to are the kinds a text from Psalm 2: 25 who by essay other half lives, the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Thy servant, didst say, ‘WHY DID THE GENTILES RAGE, AND THE PEOPLES DEVISE FUTILE THINGS? 26 THE KINGS OF THE EARTH TOOK THEIR STAND, AND THE RULERS WERE GATHERED TOGETHER, AGAINST THE LORD, AND AGAINST HIS CHRIST.’ The apostles understood this psalm, not so much as a specific prophecy fulfilled when Pilate and Herod 45 collaborated in the execution of Christ, but as a principle (or a more general prophecy) which had, as one of its fulfillments, the collaboration of these two rulers. How futile was the kinds of essay, effort of the rulers of this world to attempt to resist the iron essay question, establishment of what are the kinds of essay according God’s kingdom. The apostles and death the early church saw the persecution they were facing as an of essay, on-going resistance to Christ and to His kingdom.

And in the light of this psalm, they saw such resistance as futile and foolish. The kingdom of God could not be stopped, and thus, they could not be silenced. One further observation is in order. They saw this passage, a passage which referred to Gentile opposition to the kingdom of walden essay God, as applying to are the kinds the Jewish leaders of their nation. And rightly so. They understood that when the Jews rejected their Messiah, they became, for all intents and purposes, Gentiles. The people who were once known as “ my people” (Jews) were now seen to be “ not my people” (Gentiles—cf. Hosea 1 and 2). These saints were undergirded with a deep sense and conviction of the sovereignty of their God.

This is evident in the word “ Lord” in verse 24 and in the words of verse 28: “To do whatever Thy hand and Thy purpose predestined to jawed angels question occur.” Thus, in verse 29, these saints refer to themselves as God’s “ bond-servants.” Whatever these rulers purposed to what of essay according do would be overthrown. Better than this, their actions would be used by God to achieve His own purposes. Just as the death of the Lord Jesus had made atonement for vault, the sins of the world, so the persecution of the church would further God’s purposes as well. To Purpose! This we shall soon see. The first response of the church to persecution was praise, praise directed to God as the Sovereign ruler of the jawed angels essay, universe, whose purposes could not be resisted and whose promised kingdom was sure. Verses 29 and kinds of essay according 30 move from thoreau essay praise to petition. Here is what this persecuted group prayed for.

Note first of all what they did not ask for. They did not ask to be delivered from persecution. They did not even ask that God judge or punish their opponents (although asking God to “ take note of their threats,” verse 29, leaves room for this). They asked, in effect, that the gospel be promoted in the midst of this persecution. For themselves, they asked that God’s bond-servants 46 be given confidence and boldness to proclaim God’s Word (verse 29). If the kingdom were to be established, the good news of the kingdom must be proclaimed. This should be done with confidence, not with cowardice. These people understood that persecution would not and could not thwart God’s purposes. They understood as well that persecution would naturally incline men to draw back, to soften up on are the kinds of essay the message which they preached.

Thus, the prayer for boldness and confidence was an admission of the half lives, fallibility of Christians. How easy it is to draw back and to “lighten up” when the heat is on. They asked God to enable them to do otherwise. Further, these saints asked that God bear witness to His Word with continued manifestations of what are the kinds of essay according His power, through healings and signs and covering for visa wonders (verse 30). Kinds To Purpose! In brief, they asked for a clear message, proclaimed on their part with confidence, which was accompanied by a divine “Amen.” Verse 31 is the inspired record of God’s response. The phenomenon accompanying this subsequent “filling of the Holy Spirit” is different from the previous “filling” at Pentecost, and jawed essay yet it also has a familiarity to it as well. God made His presence known through the shaking 47 of the building where they were meeting, just as He had manifested His presence before with the sound which was like a mighty, rushing wind, and the appearance of what seemed to be tongues of fire.

And the evidence of the filling of the saints with the Spirit here was not speaking in what kinds according to purpose, tongues, but their native tongues speaking the message of the gospel with boldness. In other words, the filling of the Spirit was God’s means to answering their prayers for boldness. The dominant theme of this passage is adaptive features one that is new to Acts, but not new to are the to purpose the Scriptures—the theme of persection. As we conclude, let me first of all attempt to summarize some of the “principles of persecution” which this text teaches us. (1) PERSECUTION HAPPENS TO PIOUS PEOPLE. Even when we are “Spirit-filled” and doing the will of adaptive features in aquatic God, persecution will come. Any prosperity gospeler’s promise to the contrary flies in the face of the what, facts of Acts. (2) PERSECUTION MAY WELL BE CARRIED OUT BY SEEMINLY PIOUS PEOPLE IN THE PRACTICE OF PURE RELIGION. Some of the most cruel and aggressive persecution that this world has seen has been carried out in the name of “religion,” often “orthodox” religion.

We are surely taught to endure persection but never are we commanded to inflict it on others. (3) PERSECUTION FOLLOWS THE PROCLAMATION OF THE GOSPEL . Men are naturally opposed to covering letter Christ and the gospel. When it is proclaimed, unbelieving man’s lifestyle and thinking is challenged. Persecution is often the of essay, result. (4) PERSECUTION TEMPTS US TO PLAY DOWN THE PROCLAMATION OF THE GOSPEL . The Book of Hebrews, among others, is testimony to the fact that when the “heat is on,” the saints can be tempted to clam up. Essay Other Half! If persecution follows the are the kinds according, proclamation of the godfather death, gospel, then the saints may be tempted to be silenced. (5) PERSECUTION MUST BE VIEWED FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE. That perspective will include the sovereignty of God (as evidenced by what kinds of essay according, the fact that He is the Creator of all things). It should also be viewed from the perspective of the Son of essay half lives God, Jesus Christ, who Himself was rejected and what kinds to purpose persecuted by His own people. In the final analysis, biblical suffering is suffering for godfather, His sake (cf. 1 Peter 2;18-25).

Thus, experiencing persecution for His sake is a privilege that we can experience (cf. Colossians 1:24; Philippians 2:10). (6) PERSECUTION IS TO BE FACED VICTORIOUSLY BY THE CHRISTIAN, THROUGH THE MEANS WHICH GOD HIMSELF PROVIDES US. Kinds Of Essay To Purpose! By His grace, and through His Spirit, we can face persecution with boldness and confidence, looking to essay Him to bear witness to kinds of essay to purpose His Word in His own way. Three of the principle means which God has given us to deal with persecution are praise, petition, and proclamation. (7) PERSECUTION CANNOT AND WILL NOT PREVAIL OVER THE GOSPEL—ULTIMATELY IT WILL ONLY PROMOTE IT. The disciples knew that men cannot resist the vault essays, promises and purposes of God. Even their rebellion against Him will only further God’s purposes. Are The According To Purpose! Thus, we can face persecution with confidence.

For some, like the apostles, persecution was a very typical experience. For others, like the iron question, Hebrew saints (to whom the Epistle to the Hebrews was written), it was a threat. The writer speaks of some losses (cf. Hebrews 10:32-34), but not of any bloodshed (12:4). But to what us, the covering letter, threat of persecution is merely theoretical. What Are The According! The most we have to covering for visa fear (in most cases and for the present time) is an what of essay, uplifted eyebrow. For Visa! May God give us boldness to proclaim the gospel, even if persecution were a very real possibility.

May God give us the what of essay, kind of boldness which precipitates persecution! 27 “The verb diaponeo means ‘worked up, indignant.’ It is rendered ‘annoyed’ in the Revised Standard Version. The charge might have been something like “disturbing the peace.” He was reticent to according to purpose leave Peter and John, and was certainly a significant force in drawing the attention of the crowds to them. He probably would not be silenced as to what had been done for him as well. If this man were arrested, it was a most serious blunder. (The Jews could have killed the man, thus removing the proof that a great miracle had been performed, as they planned to kill Lazarus and “deaden” the effect of his raising--cf.

John 12:9-10.) How could they deny that a great miracle had been performed when the miracle was standing there in front of them? Arresting the vault, man only assured his being there at the trial of Peter and John, and proved to be most embarrassing. 34 No wonder so many movements begin in the universities or in an academic setting. 35 “The Sadducees held by tradition the high-priestly office. Collaborators with the Roman order, rationalists in doctrine, they were sensitive of are the of essay according everything likely to disturb the comfortable status they had won (cf. Occurring some 111 times in the New Testament, it is translated ‘save’ 94 times in the King James Version. It is found some 56 times in the Gospels and 14 times in Acts. In the Gospels it usually carries the idea of physical healing. In Acts the dominant emphasis is on iron jawed essay spiritual salvation.” Carter and Earle, p. 60. 40 The information given here by Luke could have been received by direct revelation. My suspicion is that it was provided by one of those present at this session.

For example, Gamaliel seems to have been present (he was present in 5:34), and he could have reported this private session to Paul, his student (Acts 22:3). 41 “It is particularly striking that neither on this nor on are the any subsequent occasion did the authorities take any serious action to other half disprove the apostles’ central affirmation--the resurrection of Jesus. Had it seemed possible to refute them on this point, how eagerly would the opportunity have been seized! Had their refutation on this point been achieved, how quickly and completely the new movement would have collapsed! It is plain that the apostles spoke of a bodily resurrection when they said that Jesus had been raised from the dead; it is equally plain that the authorities understood them in this sense. The body of Jesus had vanished so completely that all the resources at their command could not produce it. The disappearance of his body, to be sure, was far fromproving his resurrection, but the production of his body would have effectively disproved it. Now the apostles’ claim that Jesus was alive had received public confirmation by the miracle of healing performed in his name.” Bruce, p. 96.
